Only one nostril works

Post by AMK » Sat Apr 18, 2015 7:38 am

Due to botched surgery years ago, my septum is more deviated than ever. Since that time my right nostril is narrow at the opening but then quickly widens internally, and that nostril is always open and able to breathe. The left nostril is 2-3 times bigger at the opening but then narrows, and that nostril has started to close completely off during the night now that I'm using a nasal pillow mask. I feel like I'm breathing ok and receiving cpap treatment ok through one nostril and the sinuses on that side. I wondered if there's any reason that's bad. I know that ideally during the day the two nostrils switch dominance. I am afraid that if I go in and have another surgery to fix this that I could end up worse off than I am now, and my tendency has been to be grateful that I have at least one hole I can get air through at night. It's a little hard to fit the nasal pillow since the right nostril is so much smaller that it compresses the pillow opening closed a little, but still I seem to be doing ok.

Why not get a full face mask?

AMK, I also have two different sized nostrils with my right one narrower as well. I've just switched to the Pilairo Q mask as it is very forgiving of nostril openings. Most of the pillow is very soft and comfortable but the actual part that goes into the nostril is a little firmer than most pillows so my narrow nostril doesn't squeeze it closed. It might be worth trying.

I don't want a full face mask. I don't feel like dealing with the big struggle to find one that fits. Eye irritation has been a big problem for me and I finally feel like I have a better handle on that after going with a nasal pillow. Thank you, KatyDidAgain, I'm going to look that mask up right now!

The Breeze nasal pillows work well for me and seem to have high ratings on our sponsor, cpap.com. The pillows are interchangeable and come in different sizes so it would be possible to use two different sizes at the same time, if that worked better for you. I really like the hose routing and it feels like I'm not wearing anything at all. Nasal masks were terrible for me with my high pressure of 13.

I was never able to get used to FFM and there were too many leaks going into my eyes. I used the Swift FX for three years but my partner complained about the whistling when it lost seal at the top of my narrow nostril. I love the Pilairo Q. I have had some moisture issues in it, but Pugsy suggested increasing hose temp to try to eliminate that. It was a little rough the first few times I used it because of the stiffness of the nostril inserts, but I've since toughened up a bit there and I've slept several nights with it making it all the way through the night with no leaks! I wish I had found it sooner!

Yaconsult, the Breeze was on my list to try next after the Pilairo, but I think I've found the mask for me.

Good luck whatever you do, AMK. And keep working on it until you find what's right. It's worth it!

Boy, if the Breeze came with a fit pack I'd be interested in that hose-over-the-head action. I seem to have so much trouble with sizing. With the Swift FX, I was certain that I would need the size small pillows, possibly even the xs, and as it turned out the medium worked out better for me even though technically the small matches up better with my nostrils if I hold the cushion just under my nose like the instructions say to, so I was grateful that mask had come with 3 sizes included. So for me to have to choose just one of several different sizes of the Breeze...ugh. The Pilairo Q looks interesting because it's one size fits all so I can't get it wrong.
