Is Humidifier really necessary?

Post by Raheel » Fri Apr 17, 2015 12:39 pm

Hello everyone. I've been using Cpap along with nasal pillow mask but without humidifier. It's been four months as of now. So far so good but I don't know the long-term effect. Is it really important to use the humidifier also?

Not at all, only if you feel the need. I almost never use mine. If you live near water, or in a humid atmosphere, and don't use central heating a lot, then you may not need it.

Humidifier is for comfort only...many do not use it.

In the winter when it's dry in the house, I begin to have throat irritation and a slight cough when I use my xpap. That's my "signal" to attach the humidifier to my machine. The throat irritation and cough promptly goes away.

It's a good plan to be aware of the humidity in your usual surroundings,
knowing that a big change (new HVAC, vacation in the desert) could change things.

I'd rather not use my humidifier, but sometimes I get nasal congestion that lasts all day. When I use the humidifier it usually goes away. I always fill the humidifier tank but don't usually turn on the heat. This causes only a small amount of water to go through the hose each night (maybe a half-inch to an inch drop at the most).

I either use the humidifier w no heat (passover)

Or I sleep with no humidifier at all (commando)

(My overall AHI is consistently 0.2, so this works for me.)

Hope this info is useful for you.

As others have said, personal choice.

I use my humidifier because if I don't my nostrils feel like someone has sandpapered them during the night

When it's 8% humidity in the winter here I consider a heated humidifier to be a bonus.

I use mine 100% except on overseas vacations. I can do without, but am happier with.

A question about the Climate Line hose? I know it needs to be hooked up to a humidifier, but I've never used a humidifier, so don't use the Climate Line, just hook my regular hose into the blower. If I just attach the water tank, will that run the CL? Or are there more controls that are needed?

You can attach the humidifier and leave the water chamber totally dry and attach the ClimateLine hose...
The default is for automatic humidity delivery so you will need to go into the clinical set up menu and change things in the set up menu so that you can set the humidity and the air temperature separately and independently of each other.

So..since you don't need or want added moisture...set the humidity level to 0 and that turns off the heat to the water chamber. You don't need water in it if there is no heat since that is your preference.

BUT you can still change the air temp in the Climateline hose totally separately from the humidity setting.
Warmer air can be used without adding the moisture if that is what someone wants but the humidifier will need to be attached and a trip into the clinical settings menu will need to be made to change from automatic to patient/manual settings for the humidity and air temp.

Thanks as always for the clear explanation, Pugsy, I have an Aussie hose, but if it goes bad, I would like to get the cheaper Climateline, so am glad it will work.
