For those who want to quit CPAP

Post by wm_hess » Wed Apr 15, 2015 6:49 pm

For those of us who want to quit therapy because it's too difficult, distracting, ugly or whatever, might want to read this article

http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSK ... 5?irpc=932

The article refers to a new study that states people who have sleep apnea and don't treat it show cognitive decline 13 years sooner than those who don't have apnea, OR THOSE WHO TREAT IT WITH CPAP.

Untreated apnea shows decline around 77 while treated and non sufferers start showing around 90.

Thanks Bill.

From the article:
When a patient comes to the doctor’s office with memory complaints, sleep apnea should be one of the diagnoses considered, he added.
Why the hell not catch sleep apnea at routine physicals and start treatment before the memory problems start??

Because the average doctor is to ignorant or to obstinate to even be aware or consider it.

Perhaps doctors should be required to have annual apnea screenings like commercial drivers in order to maintain their license and cognitive ability, not to mention a heightened awareness of apnea.

Thanks for the article, Bill!

I changed primary care physicians because my previous doctor didn't seem to have any response to my non-stop exhaustion other than: maybe chronic fatigue syndrome. My new physician took one look at my medical history form and said, hmmm... high blood pressure, weight gain, fatigue, snoring, depressive symptoms - I'm scheduling you for a sleep study. There are good doctors out there, but you know the joke: "what do you call the person who graduated at the bottom of his/her medical school class?"

I like that the article said those with TREATED apnea show cognitive decline at the same rate as people without apnea. Most studies forget to look at that and just make the ASSUMPTION that treating apnea will help. This is the first article I've seen that actually looks at stats for treated folks.

Thankfully for me my family doctor insisted I go for a sleep study due to some issues I was having, none of which were typical sleep apnea symptoms. I didn't have any typical symptoms of SA, except snoring. Unfortunately for me, once I was diagnosed is when the problems started. The support I had was non-existant. The medical team were all but useless and I've had to figure everything out on my own.

Those of us who work intellectually can testify that cognitive ability is different pre apnea, post apnea and post treatment. Just the time it takes to grok new concepts, write code that works well shows you the difference very quickly.

I bet they were typical, but typically people are not aware of them.

I had the same experience, I changed to a different PA and she took one look at me and the symptoms(fatigue, daytime sleepiness, HPB, anxiety) and scheduled me for a sleep study. She has a sleep apnea poster listing co-morbidities in her office.

Thank goodness for her, I'm feeling way better in just over a month.

I had to fight every step of the way...
Finally he said...see this psychiatrist and let us let him decide. He was so sure the psych doctor would say I was just depressed... Guess what? My primary was so bummed out at the answer given by the psych doctor, he never sent for the report. I had it sent to him!

That's what I liked as well. There is now a study that a frustrated CPAP user can look at & SEE that there is a benefit to using this contraption.

I know I had issues when I first started but I managed to get everything under control over time. I was not happy at the beginning and had trouble getting to sleep, but now when I put a mask on, its a signal to the mind that it's time to sleep. I tend to fall asleep within minutes of masking up.
