How long does a typical APAP machine last?

Post by Sparky223 » Sun Apr 12, 2015 5:25 pm

I have a PR System One with about 4.5 years on it. It will try to start then shut off and automatically restart. Each time the pressure increases a little bit until it will finally start and go all night. Seems to be taking longer to get running. Apria has told me to get a new prescription to see if insurance will cover a new one. On medicaid now.

Most people will get more than 5 years from a machine. Machines will last longer but many people want to upgrade to the newest models as soon as insurance will cover it.....usually 5 years. I'm not sure of Medicaid guidelines.

Seems like 5yrs is the gold standard. It will be a disaster if I cannot get a new machine through insurance.

Make sure you call medicaid and tell them the problem you are having.

Sounds like it's a Series 50 machine. They seemed to have that problem (and others). Someone posted a "fix" for some problem they had with their machine which involved adding a screw somewhere in the main board (which was later added to the Series 60 machines). If you can find it, or if someone has the link handy, it might be worth a try. I don't know if it's the SAME problem you're having, but you should investigate whether it's related. I tried searching but couldn't find the specific thread I was looking for, which had pictures, I believe.

You might also contact http://www.acbio.com and see if they have any ideas, too.

I may have started the whole 'screwy' thing (appropriate, I know) by noting that there's a big screw through the 60 series board between the sensors, having heard reports that there is none on the 50 series... someone else pointed out (may have been grayghost4) that there's a HOLE in the 50 board, and a spot for a screw, but no screw...

and, that multiple people have said that even removing and reseating the board on the sensors fixed some folks machines.

the logical take-away is that one of the engineering defects in the 50 series is that the board gets loose and the flow/pressure sensors get a leak, and then the machine errors out... and they put a screw in to fix it on the 60 series.

Yeah. I knew you and "grayghost4" had posted making references about it (I did find some of those posts).
But, I couldn't find a specific thread.......and was thinking I saw pictures somewhere.
Does this sound like a similar problem?

it *could* be... depends on why it's shutting off... if there's any error messages... I've heard tales of people fixing their machines when they were cutting out, errors, alarms, etc, here, and on other places.

it's a possibility with exploring, given how easy it is to remove the two t15 screws, pull the knob and lift the lid, then remove the board... reseat the silicone couplers to the air channel, and put the board back on...

doesn't even involve any sneaky plastic clips like the resmed s9 does

I am considering opening it up, but I am scared to screw it up worse.

Oh man, that doesn't look good at all.
I have no idea what that thing that got too hot does though. Let me look around to see if I have a service manual for the 50 series machine.

Here is another thread dealing with that problem and it's fix. (the burned connector issue)

Both those issues deal with the humidifier though

Fixing what's obvious might just correct other problems in the process, or, not.
