still cant sleep

Post by NCBIKER » Wed Apr 01, 2015 7:42 am

Still cant keep nasel pillows on and sleep after about two hours i just take it off . Cant seem to get past this thing , doctor gave me ambien doesnt work makes me feel like yuk the next day, tried tylenol pms doesnt work and melitonin . Its only been a little over a week but its frustrating . In sleep study i didnt sleep well but kept the mask on at least. Maybe it will just take more time not giving up.

I realize I'm a total noob - but why are you taking them off??

I'm only 5 days into this, but I am soooo exhausted from not sleeping well for years, that frankly I can sleep any which way. I slept fine in all my sleep studies, even with a horrible nose mask that I didn't like during the third one, and now I sleep fine with nasal pillows - even the first night with the wrong size that made me feel suffocated, I still managed over 5 hours with them on, because I'm just that tired all the time. I guess I'm lucky I never fell asleep driving.

So, back to my question - what is so wrong that they are keeping you up, and making you take them off, 'cuz I just don't get it?

Are you awake and aware when you take them off?

Besides trying/getting a different mask, you should post ALL of your machine and humidifier settings.
As it is, we have absolutely no idea what you've got. Could be your machine settings are suboptimal or if you're using an APAP in a range of pressures, the pressure changes could be waking you up.

If you won't give us the info we've asked for, we can't help you... or do you just want to let off steam?

Welcome to the forum,
Like others have said we need more info to really help you out. Start by registering and filling out your equipment profile. This link will help. wiki/index.php/Registering_Equipment_in_User_Profile
Sometimes our brain has to be retrained to sleep with this new object. Start by not taking it off to sleep. If you can't fall asleep get up and do something else until you are sleepy. Your brain needs to know mask=bed=sleep. You have only been trying a week and even if you only increase a little each night soon you may have it figured out.
If it's a problem with settings, we need to know what they are to help.

How long are you lying in bed with the mask running and NOT being able to get to sleep before you decide to take the mask off?

As a general rule, if you're not asleep within about 20 minutes of lying down with the mask on, it's worth forcing yourself to get OUT of bed when you take the mask off. Go into a different room and do something quiet and relaxing and sleep inducing. Once you are starting to feel sleepy again, it's time to go back to the bedroom, put the mask back on, and try to get to sleep. If you once again cannot get to sleep in about 20 minutes, you need to once again get out of bed, go into a different room, and wait to get sleepy. Repeat until you finally fall asleep with the mask on because you are finally so tired that you no longer care that you're falling asleep with the mask on your nose.

Yes, this suggestion can lead to some sleepless nights. But it's the only way you're going to unlearn the lesson you've taught yourself so well: Right now your unconscious mind knows that you will eventually just give up and pull the mask off. And you then reward your unconscious mind for keeping you awake and yourself for pulling the mask off by allowing yourself to go to sleep without the PAP on. So the unconscious part of your mind is finding a way to keep you awake until you're ready to throw in the towel and sleep without the mask on.

Teaching your unconscious mind that you will NOT give in to the temptation to just fall asleep maskless is NOT easy for many of us. And by giving into your unconscious mind's desire to not sleep with the mask, you're making that task even harder.

Well done!

I think it does get better. It has for me, at least. Just keep going, one night at a time

Congratulations on keeping the mask on.

Yes, it does get better. But it can take some time to learn how to sleep well with this strange alien on your face. Take it one night at a time for now.
