Everything was great until....

Post by bri127 » Mon Mar 30, 2015 9:31 am

I've been using my mask for about 2 months and I have really gotten used to it and love it. It does what its supposed to do, and other than a few marks on my face it is causing me no problems. Until a few days ago it started hissing like crazy.
I put the hose with the end connected to the part that snaps into the mask against my hand tight, and heard no hissing. This makes me assume that there is no air escaping from the hose or anything. My mask is the same fit it has been this whole time, and I tried making it a bit tighter. The hissing seems to be coming from the part where you click it into the mask but I tried making sure it was in well. I have no idea if its broken or I'm overlooking something. I can't sleep like this because I don't think I'm getting as much air, and its loud and keeping me awake. Help!

It would certainly help if you listed your equipment so we knew what mask you were talking about.

It would help if we knew which mask you were talking about.

When you have time please add your equipment to your profile like I have mine. It helps us help you faster and better when we know what you are talking about.

I read someplace that someone with the same mask had the leak where the hose snaps into the mask check to see if its clicked in right if so see if they will replace it

Thats what I'm worried about.. if its broken. I don't think I can get that part replaced. Only buy it. It seems to click into place (I hear it and it looks right) but its not acting as if it is. Thanks.

Can you take it to your DME to see if they can check it??

I have never heard of a DME... I feel awfully dumb. My homecare provider... where I got the mask from... is an hour away so it is not an easy thing to do. I will look into it and maybe call them.

DME is cpap speak for Durable Medical Equipment Provider... so your homecare provider is your DME. I use the same mask that you have; the hissing air could simply be coming from the air vents around the nose piece, placed there to prevent re-breathing... you want to be breathing the air that's coming in from the machine. By all means, have your DME check it out if you're concerned about it, you'll sleep better knowing it's OK, and if it's not OK you'll know that too.

It is a full face mask and has an anti-asphyxiation valve near where it connects to the hose. It is possible that the valve is stuck open, causing air to escape there. There should be a little flap that can open and close. Sometimes it gets stuck.

Another thing to check is that the exhaust holes are not blocked. Sometimes a wet sneeze can cause some of the little holes to block and then it makes a hissing noise.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

I have checked that valve and it seems to be okay, able to move.
I also checked the exhaust holes (the small holes around where the small part clicks in to the mask right?) and it did seem to have some junk in there, I washed it and made sure it was very clean. It didn't fix the problem.
Thank you
