ok to have a used vpap machine

Post by blueeyes » Fri Mar 27, 2015 8:42 pm

A friend gave me a vpap machine that her boyfriend had used. He had COPD. Is it safe for me to use a machine someone else had? Also is their additional cleaning I should do on this machine. It is a good machine with a climate control hose. It is S9 vpap machine with humidifier. Little leary about using it.
I wondered too how to set the pressure on the vpap.
Thanks

Which VPAP model? Look for the model number on the side or underside. Will be something like 36006, 36004...

Go here and you can request the provider/clinical manual for your machine.
http://www.apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap-p ... tup-manual
It will explain the features available on your machine and also explain how to set the pressures.

I wouldn't be afraid to use it. COPD isn't normally caused by anything that is transmittable to another person and a person with COPD would have great difficulty exhaling to the point of contaminating the humidifier through the long hose anyway. I couldn't exhale with that much force and I don't have any lung disease.
I would just do the standard usual cleaning...wipe it down with an antiseptic on the outside and change out the filter for new.
Use a new hose and that would be it. You can scrub the water chamber and clean it in really hot soapy water and soak it in some disinfectant solution if you wish or just get a new chamber as they aren't horribly expensive.

yes, it's quite safe, there's really nothing that can make it back into the machine against 6 feet of blowing air

wash out the humidifier chamber with nice hot soapy water, and you're good to go.

you can also wash the hose, if you want.

By the second day we all have "used" machines.
As has already been said, just clean it and replace the hose and Mask and filter.

I asked about the specific model because the OP mentioned that the previous user had COPD and I wondered if the machine was the VPAP-COPD. It may not matter in terms of the settings/operation but I thought it might be good to know at the outset.

it says it is vpap smart stop model. Humidifer says h5i. I cannot find a model number and do not have a book for it.

will I be able to set the pressure on this machine or do I need to try a dme to do this? Thanks for all of the help here. I have cleaned it twice already trying to make sure it is clean.

The S9 machines all have the model names clearly shown on the top of the blower unit.
Smart stop is not a model name...it's a feature that the machines have.

Up by the on/off button is usually where the model name is...some VPAP choices are
VPAP S
VPAP Auto
VPAP S/T (think that's the wording)
VPAP Adapt
and there are others I think but those are the main ones.

Once we know exactly which machine model you are using then we can tell you which manual to get and then you can set the pressure yourself...no need to take it to anyone unless you just want to.

This tells me your machine is a S9 series as that is the only model that works with this humidifier.

Model numbers are usually on a sticker and have REF in front of the model number. I think on the side of the blower somewhere but might be on the bottom. Not really needed though because all the S9 machines clearly state the model name on the top of the blower.

I believe the S9 model 36016 is the VPAP Auto
and you would need to request this manual
ResMed S9 VPAP Auto, VPAP ST, VPAP S (combined manual)
from the link I posted above

pugsy thank you so much did not know ref was the model number. It is model36006a. Thanks everyone. I do not want to go the dme unless I have too. I was trying to figure out how to set the pressure on it myself.

that's a "VPAP Auto" it's very easy to set pressures on.

go to the site pugsy listed above and request, by email, the manual for
"ResMed S9 VPAP Auto, VPAP ST, VPAP S (combined manual)"

what pressure do you need?
