antioxidant NAC and sleep apnea

Post by wildboar » Fri Mar 27, 2015 11:01 am

Was talking to a friend (no sleep apnea involved) and he said he wasn't feeling as energetic because he hadn't been taking Vit D and NAC. So I think what is this NAC... do a few searches and come across this.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21838198

"CONCLUSIONS:
Oral NAC administration appears to have a therapeutic potential in the treatment of OSAS. It is proposed that long-term treatment with NAC in patients with OSAS may reduce their dependency on continuous positive airway pressure therapy."

Has anyone taken this stuff?

NAC, as anti-oxidant, may have protective effect (if it can increase intracellular GSH level) on neurons from oxidative stress caused by SA (e.g., large fluctuations of spO2). Not a replacement of CPAP by all means..

Perhaps for camping?
Of course, a loud snorer may wake up in the lake.

I wouldn't get too excited about that... I think the OSA connection is probably almost incidental to the researchers studying the chemical (NAC) and happening to make that connection... there are a ton of things studied all the time that we never see unless we make a point of looking, and this one looks more like one of those, of interest only to other researchers at the moment, rather than anyone here for now.

With a sample size of 20 people, you really cannot draw any solid conclusions. I would take it with a grain of salt.

I take NAC, time release, twice a day, 600 mg each dose, for its antioxidant properties. Unfortunately, I've seen no effect on my OSA from it.

I have taken NAC in the past to help with sinus issues. It helped a little bit but not enough for me to continue taking it. I can't say I noticed any difference in my AHI.
