Sleep Disruption - 68

Post by OMG sleep » Wed Mar 04, 2015 8:23 pm

So the home nurse just came (super late of course) and brought my CPAP machine.

She showed me the results of my sleep study with 68 disruptions hourly. I cannot remember the formal/scientific term for disruptions (that would help me do some online research.

She said poor sleep is 30 disruptions per minute vs. my 68. I was wondering if my 68 (more than 1 per second) was a stat to get worried anbout, or if it's pretth

Please advise. YUIAQ

The term to look up is AHI or Apnea Hyponea Index and that's a per hour index and not a per minute index/average.

I think that you have gotten some units of measure confused.
It appears that your sleep study showed 68 per hour and she meant to say that poor is 30 per hour. A number above 30 per hour is considered severe sleep apnea and any number above 5 per hour needs to be treated.

Things to do:

1) Get your own copy of the sleep study so you can see how the events break out. 30 hypopneas per hour is pretty bad but 30 obstructive events per hour is worse and 30 central events per hour is really bad. Without the sleep study, you really don't have a way to determine where you are and what equipment is appropriate to treat your condition.

2) Click on the control panel and register the equipment that got delivered. It is really important because some DME's will deliver what are called on this forum "bricks" which cannot give you any data at all about how well you are doing. If you got a brick, its not too late to have a screaming fit and get a full data machine instead.

3) Prepare to ask many questions about any and all things you don't understand. Someone on this forum will either have experienced the same thing or will know in detail the answer to your questions. You are on a journey and others here will help.

Best wishes.

Yes it appears I was confused (if you get to know me you'll undersand that's my typical base setting for operation) lol

So is it as bad as the nurse made it out to be because she wa sreally focused on it. Any good advice for my first night on a cpap?

Yeah it's still pretty bad but not the worst reported AHI.

For tonight try hooking everything up and watch TV or read a book with the mask and machine on to help you get sort of used to having the mask on and air blowing either up your nose or in your mouth. That way you remove the additional stress of feeling under the gun to go right to sleep with all this new stuff going on. It's definitely a bit weird feeling at first...later it actually gets to be comfortable but at first it is just plain weird.
