Did anyone have numbness prior to OSA treatment? PS I'm New
Hi, new here. Had a home sleep study done in the beginning of February after a few years of putting it off. Had snoring and daytime drowsiness. Chalked it up to two small kids, a job, a husband and a lot of stuff to do. Apparently, that wasn't all that was causing it and it continued to get worse. Sometime last year, I started having numbness on my left side. Hands, leg, feet, and face. As of yet, after having CT, MRI, MRI of spine, EMG, etc., no cause of it. Good news, it wasn't a stroke and doesn't appear to be MS. I'm wondering if anyone else had experienced any numbness prior to being treated for OSA. I've heard from other friends that have had horrible migraines and other issues that went away after starting to use their CPAP, so I figured I'd ask. Maybe a long shot, but I don't know that many people with OSA, at least that have said they have it.
Anyway, after my home study came back, insurance won't pay for titration so I'm getting an APAP machine this week. AHI was 17.8 - so moderate. The doctor thinks it might be higher, doesn't have a lot of confidence in the home study but at this point, I'm not too worried about that. I just want to work on getting better sleep. I'm nervous and a little scared I will have a hard time with the machine. i've read some posts where new comers are angry and scared and other feelings. I totally understand it as I myself have felt some of those things, but I just have to imagine that it has to be better than this. Better than standing in the shower in the morning and wondering if there is any possible way I can take a nap at work for an hour and if anyone will catch me because I'm just so exhausted. That after having "slept" 8 hours or more. Or laying there in bed and not being able to sleep at all some nights, counting down in my head the amount of time I have left before I have to get up for work.
Your community seems really great. Lots of good information here. Overwhelming, but in a good way. Thanks for having me.

look at it like this... an apap machine is more of a multi-night, much more comfortable titration, and is perfectly acceptable, and perhaps even preferable, and more accurate for the majority of people, than a few hours in a strange place with wires and stuff glued all over youRocketshan wrote:Anyway, after my home study came back, insurance won't pay for titration so I'm getting an APAP machine this week.
the trick to making them work well is careful monitoring of your data, and not leaving the machine set at factory defaults for more than a day or two.

Remember that napping is counterproductive if you don't use a machine... you'll end up feeling worse than if you hadn't had one at all. Frustrating, but true.

I have been complaining about numbness in my feet and toes for over 4 years. 2 weeks ago I saw a PA that had a new test that confirmed I have numbness. Wow. I was beginning to doubt it. Now if I only knew what caused it and how to stop it.
XPAP did not seem to affect it, but standing all day does.
Maybe in another 4 years someone will come up with a non prescription solution. I hate prescriptions more than the pain at this point.

Julie,
Thanks. I do know sleeping without is counterproductive. I don't have my machine yet anyway. I've just felt this way for such a long time. I know a nap won't help at all right now either but it still sounds good.

Welcome.
Relax.
Put your feet up and have a cup of coffee.
Don't worry that much about not adapting to CPAP. The people who adapt easily tend to never post anything. The nutjobs post continuously about how evil CPAP is. (Although a few of the nutjobs post about how CPAP is the greatest thing in the world.) If you do have problems, you can probably solve them to some extent, with help from people here.
Don't be that concerned about your doctor's skepticism about home sleep tests or home CPAP data. It's not perfect, but it is VERY valuable data.
Read the useful links in my signature line below for information on how to not get screwed by the DME. Be especially careful that you get a good, data capable machine. Find out what model APAP you're getting before it's too late to change.
As to numbness, it's possible CPAP will help, but don't put too much faith in that. CPAP can improve a lot of things and your numbness might be related.
Check out all your medicines for things that might cause numbness. Are you taking any statins for cholesterol?
Even some vitamins can cause numbness, so you might check that out. Be especially careful about taking "mega vitamins." Check the labels and don't take too many times the RDA amount until you investigate.

Two studies exist. Don't remember the names of them. One is from Denmark wherein statins caused polynauropathy in 26% of the sample. The sample size was 500,000 people. Another study, regarded as very good by experts claim the same results. This last study was in the US. Do you take statins? I did and I have this!bwexler wrote:I have been complaining about numbness in my feet and toes for over 4 years. 2 weeks ago I saw a PA that had a new test that confirmed I have numbness. Wow. I didn't have any numbness before OSA treatment but I did read somewhere that OSA can be a factor in peripheral neuropathy which can cause pain and/or numbness.
Good luck
Pete.

I would go to the neurologist and get a nerve study and a thin slice MRI to really rule out stroke

Re: Did anyone have numbness prior to OSA treatment? PS I'm New
I've been seeing a neurologist since it started. i have had two MRIs and a CT, and I've had nerve testing, all came back negative. When it first started I was sent to the ER to rule out stroke. He can't figure out what is causing it, says it's probably "just me". I don't take any medications. I could probably stand to take my Vitamin D, so I will start that back up again.
Still waiting for my CPAP machine. Not a very good start to using this DME. I guess though it's just been tough with shipping due to ice storms in other areas.
Thanks all for your responses.

Before cpap, I had some numbness that went away within the first few weeks.
The numbness was between my ears.

So I had left side numbness in my hand, arm, and face in addition to debilitating migraines on a nearly daily basis. For 10 days in 2012, my left side was paralyzed. CT scan came up clean, so they just decided to not explain it, and send me on my way. Finally, last year, a new job, and new neurologist sent me for an MRI (also clean) and two EEG's (one showed some seizure activity, but the second one came up clean). She sent me for a sleep study, diagnosed, yadda yadda, and the cpap got rid of the numbness within a few days, and I've had a total of one migraine in the past year. So it could be possible!

Vitamin D is also linked to peripheral neuropathy, so that might help.Rocketshan wrote:I could probably stand to take my Vitamin D, so I will start that back up again.
