Not sure but I wonder if a room humidifier would help for now. We have a whole house one but I noticed last night when I added a fleece blanket to my bed that it sparked as I was spreading it out! I didn't realize how dry my bedroom was! I have a cold air tabletop humidifier that I will run in there till the weather warms up.
Morbius, are you bored?

We are simply miserable when we have nasal issues like you are describing.
I suspect your nasal mucosa just got fed up with being dried out. Google "cpap rhinitis" and you will see what I mean.
Perhaps the humidity in your home was maybe a little higher when you first started therapy and isn't adequate now. That might explain why things weren't too bad initially but have gone downhill now.

Mouth gets dried out because we mouth breath and we mouth breathe because the nose gets congested from being dried out and a nasty little circle develops.

You could maybe try adding a small dish of water next to the air intake to try to get some passover humidity but I doubt you would be able to get enough moisture that way. A room humidifier or maybe a vaporizer might help a little if it is setup so the machine draws in the extra humidified air directly. They would have to also be close to the air intake for best chance of success.

Your best bet of course, would be the integrated humidifier that goes with your cpap machine. Too bad you are so far away as I have a spare S9 humidifier.

You didn't ask... but I'd like to just give you a note that some people here have tried the MAD and found they have issues... not the least of which is developing TMJ - temporomandibular joint problems, and they're not fun at all. The success rate for OSA with MADs is also not perfect by any means, and you might want to do a forum search here to read more about the experiences with MADs people have had before going ahead with your plans.

In the US you can purchase a vaporizer. This is a device that either works by heating water to a vapor or using ultrasound to vaporize the water. They can be purchased at most drug stores for $20 or $30 USD and are typically used when a child has an upper respiratory infection to provide additional humidify action to soothe nasal passages. Is anything like that available? With a vaporizer you can direct the steam in the general direction of your air intake (but not directly into it).

Curious about the financial connection that sleep centre might have with the manufacturers (or sellers) of the MAD - there are many such places that starting with the doctors, have a connection to the whole set-up, and anyone who 'insists' I get anything, let alone medical, is going to be very suspect to me!

You have nothing to lose by doing some more research...

I wonder if they are worried about the low compliance rate (sadly) for xPAP therapy and so direct their patients toward MADs. You seem like you are willing to work hard to make it work for you. It is too bad that they seem unwilling to work with you.

alexander wrote:Thanks for pointing that out. And now I’m a bit confused – I was strongly adviced by the sleep center to pick MAD therapy instead CPAP, despite me having a strong wish to use CPAP if that is the most effective and safest therapy. I said that the impracticality of having to deal with all the equipment is less of a factor for me. They still insisted that I should go for MAD. I also did express my concerns about long-term side-effects with regards to join problems, but was told that joint problems were very rarely an issue with a oral device molded after my teeth/mouth. In addition, I expressed concerns about its effectiveness for side-sleepers which I have read might be a problem, but was told that it was not an issue. It would scare me if I was better at doing my research than sleep specialists, so I hope they’re right. I did pay about $1.250 for the teeth mold/MAD device. I could get an AirSense 10 AutoSet with a mask for that money.
You got screwed.

They're either idiots or are getting some sort of benefit from you getting a MAD instead of CPAP.

Chalk it up to experience and work on getting CPAP for real treatment.

You need a humidifier. CPAP without a humidifier is going to be a bad idea in Norway, especially in the winter.

If you decide to buy a CPAP machine, check the useful links in my signature line below for info on which machine to get.
