Sleep Apnea "Going Out Of My Mind!"

Post by Ms. OwLMooN » Wed Feb 25, 2015 2:45 pm

For a really long time I've been struggling with trying to get used to putting my CPAP mask on before bed and have a decent nights sleep! Some days I can put the mask on and get a few hours hear and there but most of the time I can't. One of the reasons is it's been so long having Sleep Apnea that sleep depervation is becoming a "very" serious issue. I am becoming more and more grumpy at others. I feel like a complete zombie all the time!
I've lost interest in just about everything and sometimes for no reason at home I start crying histerically! Oh and one more thing, I am Bipolar and Sleep Apnea is sending my emotions on a horrendous roller coaster ride! It almost seems as though trying to help myself with this is almost becoming a catch 22! I have anxiety from the whole CPAP thing and I'm getting more anxiety not sleeping with the mask and machine.

I would like to know if at all if someone out there has had "some" of the same experiences?

Advice is greatly appreciated!

When you start craving brains as food, go see your doctor.

Unfortunately, there's nothing unusual about your problems.

First off, relax. (Yeah, I know that's easy to say, but try.)

What in particular is making you uncomfortable about wearing your CPAP? We might have some suggestions for specific problems.

You might try wearing the CPAP while reading or watching TV or something similar to get you used to it.

I'll be interested in your replies.

6 months into this I'm still waking up numerous times during the night. I think that I've had 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep 3-4 times in 6 months.

I am bi-polar also, and as you say, that's become more of an issue. In two appointments with the psych doc over the last six months, one of his first questions is about how I've been feeling. I've told him that I truly don't know for certain since I'm so screwed up from not getting enough sleep.

The only positive for me is that I'm not snoring (that I can tell), so I'm more comfortable with the CPAP than I am without it. If it wasn't for that one fact, I'd simply quit. Truthfully don't know if I'm getting any more sleep now than I was 8 months ago.

Haven't had any of the issues you have but is your bipolar being treated with meds? If it is maybe the meds are causing sleep problems. As for the emotions, when you let yourself accept that you will feel better using cpap then you can start to feel better. I mean don't see the therapy as a problem but as a solution! One less thing to worry about...just a daily routine like brushing your teeth.

Make sure you are in a comfortable sleep setting. Avoid caffeine and alcohol in the evening. Don't read or watch tv in bed. Beds are for sleeping and that other thing You'll get it eventually. Just let go of the anxiety and it will disappear. Anxiety likes to be the center of attention and will move on if you shun it.
Morbius, are you bored?

If you've been using a range of pressures, I'd suggest looking for that connection in your reports. Pressure changes can be sleep disturbing for some folks.

Thanks.

I've done some things there and it has helped.

Recently someone mentioned to essentially have the pressure at one setting. i.e. Have the low and high settings the same. That was an absolute disaster.

I've got an appointment on the 16th. At this point I'm just going to wait. I think I'm to the point of over analyzing things that I really don't know enough.

Are you sleeping without your CPAP? If you are then you are your own worst enemy, and the catch 22 you maybe in is
caused by you not sleeping with your CPAP. If you are sleeping without your CPAP then you are not breathing while you are sleeping. Stress Hormones kick in trying to keep you alive. Causing all the issues you state you are having.

I would suggest you pull up your big girl panties, and make this therapy work for you. It is miserable the road you are heading down.

I wish you well..

My settings were 6.5 and 10. My chart for pressure showed 90% at 9 (I'm doing this from memory.) Increased low to 8.5 and left top at 9.0

That's it? That's not setting them to the same pressure.......and you didn't say what was "disastrous" about it, or how long you left it at those settings. And, just using the "90%" number is not very reliable without studying the reports and finding out what is driving the pressures and whether those pressures are actually resolving any events.

Den,

The advice came from one of the old time folks here. It was from the charts that I had posted.

I teach dog training as a hobby. I am more than aware of the fact that you don't judge things by what happens one time. You need to look at trends and patterns.

That being said, it was one of THE worst nights that I had in the six months that I've been going through this. I woke up about every 45 minutes to an hour. Then awake for at least 1/2 hour before I could go back to sleep again. That night I got about 3 hours sleep.

Sorry, but I wasn't about to go through that again.

If anything, I'd try to somehow build up to that situation, but that change isn't going to happen again.

Thanks for the help.

The 90% doesn't show what pressure it was AT for 90% of the night...it shows the pressure it was AT OR BELOW for 90% of the night. Not that it's a huge jump, but yanno...going from 6.5 to 8.5 CAN be a bit of a stretch to hop to right off. Could be that using 7.5 as a start would be an easier transition.
