Re: Is my new RESMED S9 APAP Defective...or?
I think your machine is fine. I have one and when the ramp feature is set very short, or turned off, pressure can go high as the machine responds to your irregular breathing while awake. The machine has no way of knowing whether you're awake or asleep. The ramp feature is there to ensure that you ha...

Re: The first hour of sleep - why such a difference?
I don't know that machine, but it could be that your machine is ramping up during that time. My machine was initially set for a 40 minute ramp, and I reset it to 5 minutes which seems to work fine. Initial pressure setting might also be set too low. Mine was originally set to 4" and I felt like I wa...

Re: Using auto CPAP machine manually per therapist advice?
I didn't want to settle for the CPAP the sleep center wanted me to supply me with (ResMed S9) in case I was one of those people that really needed, or could benefit from, an APAP machine. So, even though I have good medical insurance, I bought the S9 auto-PAP out of pocket. As it turns out, I have c...

Re: OT - Has anyone here tried Diatomaceous Earth?
Geez, what will people put in their bodies next? I can see lots of reasons NOT to ingest it on purpose. That said, when I was in college, one prof said that McDonalds used DE in their shakes as a thickening agent. Don't know whether that's true or not, but after looking at all those sharp little edg...

Re: Tongue Thrusting?
Thanks. I recall hearing from someone that the jaws are supposed to be open only a few millimeters during sleep. I, too, have found that my jaw gets thrust way forward during sleep. I thought it might be my un- or semi-conciously trying to compensate for slight leaks around the nasal pillows, but I ...

Tongue Thrusting?
I've had my machine about 10 days now, and I've found that when I awaken in the morning (totally refreshed and ready to go!) my lower front teeth are a little sore, and I have trouble closing my jaw completely. Almost like I've been pushing on them with my tongue while I've slept. I know that tongue...

Re: Natural way of dealing with Sleep Apnea?
I once met a person who believed in using special crystals (as in rocks) as their under-arm deodorant every day. I'm not kidding. I guess the idea was to banish the stinky spirits. Hey, don't laugh. Sea otters, Enhydra lutris , have been carrying their anvil stones in their armpits for, well, just ...

Re: I was opening my mouth and I didn't know?
Move over. I might be in the same boat with you. I've only been on CPAP for a week now, using Opus 360 nasal pillows, and data indicates high leak rates at times. I've awakened a number of times to the feeling of cold air on my lip, usually when the hose is tugging on the mask or when I'm side sleep...

You know, Stan, when faced with the high cost of a BiPap, the Red Green in me envisions making something out of a ShopVac and plenty of duct tape.

Re: Where do I go from here?
Stan, my man! There's something not quite right there. If the sleep study report said 15 cm water (mine said 10), then that's what the pressure should be. 15 cm refers to pressure. Think of a clear plastic tube. Hold both ends up and pour some water in one end. Then, holding both ends level, blow on...

Re: Questions about Contec CMS-50E pulse oximeter...
I just got mine yesterday. Played around with it and was impressed. Software wouldn't run on my home Win 2K machine, but it works fine on my office WIn XP SP3. Data presentation is very professional looking. It appears to have been written for clinical use. Took the oximeter with me on a hike after ...

Before You Were Diagnosed . . .
. . . did you ever have dreams like these? 1. I was underwater, heading for the surface. But I couldn't get there. Somehow the smooth, rippled surface of the water remained just out of reach. Then I'd awaken breathing heavily. 2. I was trying to escape my house through a small window set up high on ...
