Newbie with nosebleeds

Post by Heather R » Sat Jan 31, 2015 9:46 am

Hi; I just joined and unsure of where to add to profile and I didn't see my machine listed.

I'm using a ResMed Airsense Machine and a ResMedFX nasal mask.
Because I had nose bleed with sinus headache from dryness, I called supplier and they said to turn humidity up to 6 or 7 from 4 setting. Last night for half the night I had it on 6 then turned it up to 7.I had used saline nasal spray during the day at at night and this AM. The humidity on machine goes to 8.

Long story but short this AM I'm still having some nose bleeding. I'm on warfarin for Atrial fibrillation and that may be adding to my problem.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Welcome Heather,
Nose bleeds and sinus headaches can happen with dry mucosa and dialing in humidity levels will help. The warfarin will increase your clotting time, therefore you will bleed longer. I would talk with the doctor who ordered the warfarin, especially if you haven't had a blood test recently. To make sure you are at the level he wants you at.
I also use http://www.amazon.com/Ayr-Saline-Nasal- ... +nasal+gel Just a small dab on a Qtip in the nostrils before I put on my pillow mask.

Sorry to hear about the nose bleeds.

I am one that just likes a lot of humidity because it is so dry where I live, the humidity helps my sinuses a lot. I also have my Airsense on manual setting of 7 and I will end up using an entire tub of water in one night's sleep. I have not tried the highest setting of 8 as I think my face would get wet and I might have a problem with condensation in the hose, but you could always give it a try and see what happens.

Many times when people on cpap complain of dry throat or nose it's really because their mouth opens when they sleep and they get a lot of air leaking through the open mouth which really drys things out. It might be that you are mouth breathing and that is causing some dryness. If that is the case you could experiment with a chin strap to help keep your mouth shut, or even consider a full face mask. With your setting of 7 and the fact that you are using a nasal mask, I think the mouth breathing is possibly the culprit.

One other thing that might help a little is a product called AYR Nasal Saline Gel, it's a gel form so it stays in your nose longer than just saline spray. You can usually find AYR in good super markets, or places like Walgreens. In lieu of that you could also try some regular Vaseline in your nostrils too, something like AYR or Vaseline will last longer in your nostrils and help keep the membrane more moist.

Do you have Sleepyhead software so you could take a closer look at your leak profile? When you wake up and look at your sleep report on the machine's screen what do you see in terms of leak?

If you are mouth breathing and losing a lot of air that way your humidifier won't be able to keep up with that, so you should investigate that situation and try to correct it it with a chin strap possibly.

Hopefully you can get to the bottom of the nose bleeds, that's no fun especially while on the anti coagulant (Warfarin).

Your machine choices are in the equipment list but it doesn't mention ResMed.
Menu is in alphabetical order so the AirSense is up at the top.
4 choices....CPAP....Elite...AutoSet and AutoSet for Her
One of those names should be on the top of the blower. Hopefully you don't have the "CPAP" model because it doesn't gather any useful data to help you evaluate your therapy. The Elite and both AutoSets offer full data and you can use easily obtained software to evaluate your therapy.

Moisturize the heck out the nasal mucosa all day long.
Even without the blood thinner sometimes once the nasal mucosa has got dried out and a blood vessel breaks it takes quite a while for the scab to heal over well so that it doesn't keep opening the scab. Dryness of course makes it easier for the scab to come off. It may take several days for it to totally heal.

Here are your equipment choices

thanks to all.
I'm wearing a chin guard but will tighten it. With the nasal spray came a sample tube of the gel. I will try that.
I may have to try the full face mask if these doesn't work.

I'm pretty stable on warfarin but may call nurse at coumadin clinic for advice.

I finally figured out where my equipment is listed.
Don't know what the software is.

Don't forget to click on "submit" when you make your equipment choices or else the changes won't hold.

Ignore the software selection choices in the equipment menu...that was mainly for use a long time ago when we actually could purchase various software packages for our machines...none of those choices are even used now as those software versions are way outdated.

Thanks to all

I talked to Dr. and he recommended a full face mask. I was given a ResMed mask that covers nose and mouth. He also said to go to manual on heated tube and increase to highest setting. I put it at 7 and still using saline spray and gel had no bloody nose at all this AM.
I'm getting warfarin checked this coming week.
I slept over 8 hrs. but almost used all the water.
