How does blower work?

Ever since I've been using CPAP, I've wondered how the blower mechanism works. Although some folks don't believe me, although I have excellent hearing I can't hear *any* noise from mine, so I haven't a clue. Is it a fan? Squirrel cage? Vibrating reed? Or what? And I can't imagine how it changes volume/speed instantly. Quite a clever mechanism, what ever it is.

I"m tempted to say that it's elves and pixies.... but,

you might not have as good hearing as you think, because the machines DO make noise, but not much.
