Morphine, OSA and kids

Midway through 2014, researchers from Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children and Hamilton's McMaster University halted trials about the adverse effects of morphine as a pain reliever for children who had their tonsils or adenoids (commonly called a nose tonsil) removed after one child needed to be resuscitated because of a lack of oxygen.

Each hospital's ethics board, as well as Health Canada, was notified as a result. The general findings showed the adverse affects of morphine, and an alternative that managed pain just as effectively.

Researchers found morphine should not be given to children following sleep apnea operations, except in monitored or extreme cases, and that standard doses of ibuprofen and acetaminophen helped ward off pain in the three weeks of discomfort children tend to have after the operation.

Morphine, bad. Poppy seeds good, especially in cake, or kolaces.
Happy birthday.

Has something strange happened to the world since I was a kid? I had tonsils/adenoids out at 8, don't remember more than some discomfort for 1-2 days (for which I got to have lots of ice cream and Jello), and that was that. Either surg. techniques have changed for the worse, or else the world's treating the kids like babies now - e.g. when we were kids there were no such things as grief counsellors for anyone, let alone kids, and if we banged ourselves up we got a kiss, a bandaid and went on with life. Morphine? Am I missing something?

It would not surprise me to find a link between drug availability and intensity of some kinds of pain.

Not every kid has it that easy.

Of course one doctor I had when a toddler believed that small kids don't really feel pain. Sometimes things go to far the other way.

I had my tonsils out when I was 23 and it was the worst pain in my life (up to that [pre-childbirth] point). I existed on nothing but slushies for at least 2 weeks. I think they gave me hydrocodone syrup, but it's all a haze. The tonsillectomy was totally worth it though, because I was getting tonsillitis every other week, which wasn't any fun. It was worth a month of raw throat. On the other hand, my little sister had hers out when she was 8, and she was well in a day or two. I think that's just the way it goes - children heal so much faster. Honestly, I don't remember, for example, feeling heat and cold to the same degree as when I was a child. My son, with a BMI of around 14 on a heavy day, just ran right into the freezing NW Pacific Ocean. I can barely stand up to my ankles in that ice bath!
