Lightheaded in the Morning

Post by WahooNKS » Sun Jan 25, 2015 9:20 am

I have been on my CPAP for 25 days now. My ratings are excellent, 95-99%. Most mornings when I wake up I am very lightheaded, foggy brain. Takes me about an hour to get going, which usually isn't a problem since I'm retired, but wondering if anyone else experiences this. I can't believe it's normal.

Do you have a home blood pressure device? Cpap lowers BP for most people and it's very possibly lowering yours too much overnight, especially if it wasn't particularly high to begin with. You may want to consider lowering your pressures, but don't do it until you know more about what's happening... the problem here might be that if you can't get your pressure checked early in the a.m. it may revert to more normal values by the time you see the MD in the daytime... maybe he/she could lend you a BP device for a couple of days to see what's up (or down!).

Julie, thanks for the suggestion. I do take blood pressure meds. Oddly enough, I take them at night before bed. I will try taking them in the A.M. to see first if this helps. Will also check into the BP monitor.

I have a ResMed Airsense 10 Autoset. The pressure auto adjusts - no permanent setting. I can view my % ratings online by logging into the MyAir website. It gives me a nightly % rating based on many factors: Usage hours, mask seal, # of sleeping 'events' per hour, and how many times I took my mask on/off. So, yes, I suppose it can be called compliance.

Compliance is for Insurance. Typically >4hr a day 70% of the time is compliance. < 5AHI 70% of the time is compliance. You can meet the minimum of compliance 100% and not be getting anywhere close to the amount of therapy you need to feel better.

With your machine you can get a full detailed report that will give you a much better idea of what is going on than just the MyAir website. SleepyHead (Free and very popular) or Rescan.

If you are taking BP meds, you should have a BP monitor. They don't cost much and you should check when you are getting up to make sure you are not bottoming out. Normally when you get an RX, they tell you when to take the meds so that they are most effective. Changing day to night or the other way around may mean you need a different strength.

Your body adjusts to apnea. Sometimes, when you get CPAP and stop having apnea, your body needs to readjust, sort of like when you stop smoking, drinking, or drugs.

However, don't assume every problem you have is related to apnea or CPAP. You could also have something wrong with your therapy.

If you download SleepyHead and use it to check your data, you'll get a lot more data on how your treatment is working.
