I have a brick but would like a smart machine

Post by Donnasnorer » Fri Jan 23, 2015 10:36 pm

I've been lurking for almost two years and want to thank you for all the advice. You have made it easier for me to adapt to this chunk of plastic on my face. I don't know who suggested the Orajel for Dry Mouth, but I would especially like to thank them. It helps!

I have a Philips Respironics REMstar Plus C-Flex and my mask is the Mirage Quattro full face. This was what the supplier issued to me, and I accepted it without question, not knowing there were data capable machines available. Fortunately I have had no trouble with the mask, etc., but now am wondering if it wouldn't be wise to get a "better brick". I don't know if Medicare or my insurance will pay for it, but I have discussed this with my primary care doctor, and she agreed to write a prescription for whatever equipment I select. So this is just preliminary investigation.

What would you suggest I get?

Keep the brick as a backup.

If you are having problems with your therapy and want to track it, by all means get an apap, one of the ones mentioned. If not, I don't think you will gain anything except having a backup, which is always a good thing.

If purchasing out of pocket is a hardship, the used market is pretty reasonable if you can find the machines listed by Palerider. Grayghost4 is selling a zero-hour Philips Respironics 60 series Auto for $400, and that would be a very good deal. Send him a PM if interested. Also check your local Craigslist for low-hour nonsmoking, current model machines. It's amazing how many people get good equipment and never use it.

If you received your last machine recently, you might be able to exchange with the new prescription. Policies vary between DMEs and insurance, but you may as well ask. Good luck!

Most insurers and Medicare have a 5 year replacement policy. Call your insurer to find out how YOUR insurer does it. If that's the case, you've had your brick for two years, so you'll have to buy your own. Get the same model APAP so you don't have to replace the humidifier, and you can save some money there.

I do think there's great value in a data capable machine. We saw one person here who used her machine for three years without knowing it had data. When we helped her access the data her average AHI for the years of use was 20! She was getting no benefit the entire time.
