Best Place to Sell CPAP? Resmed S9 Elite

Post by KarD786 » Fri Jan 23, 2015 5:04 pm

Hello all. I have tried and failed to use my CPAP. It is a Resmed S9 Elite, and it honestly provided me more frustration than relief. I will now move to an oral appliance as I believe that will be a better option. I was wondering where the best place to sell the Resmed is? I tried a couple of the online sites that buy them, but their offers are ridiculous and I cannot afford to take such a huge loss on it just yet. It only has 192 hours logged on it and is in pristine condition. It also the data capable machine. Additionally, I am also selling the humidifier along with the machine. Any suggestions or reccomendations to where previous users have had luck would be much appreciated. Thank you

Craigslist
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

You'll find that you will likely get a boot to the teeth regardless where you sell. I've seen those on craigslist for around $300, not sure hours. Don't plan to get back your $800+ investment.

What a bummer. Thank you guys. My out of pocket cost was about $600, so I am hoping to get as close to that as possible so that I can put it towards an oral appliance. Thank you guys for your help once again.

Sounds to me like you just want to quit. Are you a "quitter"?
You really haven't given this therapy a chance.

You NEED to keep it and keep trying.

Absolutely a quitter. My apnea is on the upper range of mild, and I'm only 22 years old. Although its obvious that cpap is the most effective therapy, I really couldn't be bothered to keep tinkering with it, especially at this age. Having a CPAP would put many more restraints on my life than a appliance would. The ENT said that the obstruction is due to my tongue, and therefore I just plan to use the dental appliance till I graduate college in December of this year. Once I have a steady job, I am hoping to take a shot at tongue coblation surgery.

I can't imagine being 22 and told I need to use a CPAP. That sucks! CPAP makes camping impossible, and it's not exactly sexy. I didn't start until I was 55 years old, and I can't imagine my 20s living like that. If apnea is still mild, lose weight, exercise and screw it! Get on with your life. If you need it, suck it up and get on with therapy, but for mild apnea, no way!

You will not get back your investment. Fixed CPAP goes from $200 to $350 for current models, assuming no one has smoked around the machine and it is in like-new condition. Your machine has recently been subsumed by the Airsense 10 Elite model, so it's new, but not latest. There are lots of machines listed at higher prices, but they tend to sit on the market. Keep in mind, the main problem is you probably got yours through insurance instead of Craigslist. If not, take a look at the local Craigslist ads. You should have bought used.

Keep the machine in the closet. It might come in handy someday when it's not date night or you really need some good sleep. Otherwise sell it, take your losses. I hate to say it, but you'll probably be back, hopefully not for a lot of years.

Thanks for the kind words. I honestly wish my apnea was due to weight issues. I am about 170 pounds, fairly built, and fairly lean. I have had thyroid issues (autoimmune hypothyroid disease), so I am curious to if maybe the stress on my body made me store some extra visceral fat contributing to my tongue collapsibility. I'm at about 15% body fat right now, but am working to shed everything down to rule it out. I would have gone for the oral appliance many months ago, but the ill-informed person I spoke to at the time told me my insurance wouldn't cover it. Six months later, I found out that they do cover 50%. I am extremely upset about this as I will take a loss on the machine. I just want to get the oral appliance and move on, lol.

Nasal pillows actually can be sexy, with a touch of kinky bondage thrown in.
Besides, very few get busy with the machine running--but it can be fun to try.
Once you get a comfortable interface and the air pressure no longer freaks you out, cpap can be a comfort.
Most of us required a period of at least a few days to be able to sleep all night fully outfitted.
Picture yourself flying a jet, scuba diving, or fighting a fire. Lots of folks wear similar stuff in awesome occupations.

Another problem that I was having with the CPAP was that I would wake up to find the mask on the floor, and i had no recollection of taking it off. And then the air blowing would wake me up, and I'd be wide awake with the trouble of falling asleep with the mask on again (as if it wasn't already hard enough). I just think that at this point in life the oral appliance is a better fit for me. At 22, on most weekends I'm not even certain that I'll be home, and I'm sure you guys might empathize a little bit more if you remember being in your early 20's. I do understand that health comes first though, and am actively trying to tackle the situation.

I used to use a positive air pressure respirator for hazardous environment work. It was awesome. I once used a chemical suit, and my PAPR to inflate it at Halloween and scared small children out of their socks! Think of a cross between the Ghost Busters giant marshmallow man, and Darth Vader.

If I were 22 again (not sure I would want that) I would give this a try:

http://www.aveotsd.com/index.php

not nearly as expensive as a dental device, and worth a try.

That is a common issue with most new CPAP users......taking the mask off during the night and not realizing it. Most of us got over that and have adapted to having this thing on our faces at night.
I honestly think that I've had OSA most of my life. However, when I was 22, it was many years before CPAP had been invented. But, if I was 22 again and with the technology the way it is now, I wouldn't hesitate to be a CPAP user.

We've had numerous young people (in their 20s and 30s) on this forum over the years and they've adapted well to CPAP therapy.

If you have OSA, you need to treat it.
