F & P Icon Premo

Post by hemolyticus » Mon Jan 19, 2015 12:43 am

Hi All,

I'm hemolyticus from New Zealand. I was recently diagnosed with moderate sleep apnea(28 events/hr). The Sleep doctor recommended me for a CPAP trial. The machine that I will be using for trial is the Icon Premo. I was wondering if anyone can give me feedback with the Premo model compared to ResMed AirSense 10 Auto. Also is there any support groups here in NZ particularly in Wellington.

Thanks in advance

The Icon Premo is a decent machine, middle of the Icon line that is a straight CPAP with data reporting. I've used one in the past and liked it, I think one thing helpful for you is to get the ThermoSmart heated hose with it, that would be better than the non-heated hose.

You wanted comparison to ResMed Airsense AutoSet, the Autoset as the name implies is an Auto PAP that works within a range of pressures that are set and the machine will automatically go to the pressure it thinks is most appropriate for proper therapy within the pressure range that is set by the DME or by the user, so you are comparing apples to oranges a bit as the Premo is just a single pressure cpap. The F&P Icon Auto is more comparable to the AirSense AutoSet. Or the Airsense Elite model (straight cpap) is more comparable to the Icon
Premo.

Both good machines, but if you have any choice in the matter I would probably go for the Resmed Airsense AutoSet model to get a few more bells and whistles, and it's a newer design than the Icon line. If cost is a consideration here in the States at least the ResMed machines are considerably more expensive than the F&P machines.......don't know the cost of the machines down under tho.

If your sleep study indicated some central apnea as well as Obstructive Apnea, you might have a case to argue for the ResMed machine over the F&P. ResMed uses an FOT technology to distinguish between central apneas and obstructive apneas and will flag each type. The F&P Icon machines don't use that feature so they are just lumping both types of apneas into the Apnea catagory without distinguishing between the two. For most people with garden variety OSA this does not make a huge difference, but if your study shows a few more centrals that might give you an angle for trying to get into the ResMed machines, probably a long shot but what the heck.

Also try to stay away from the low end models in both lines, the Icon Novo, and the Airsense cpap as those low end models in each line do not have full detailed data reporting so go for at least the Premo, or the Auto in the Icon line, and go for either the Elite, or Autoset models I'm the Airsense line.

Good Luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Thank you TangleHose for the very informative feedback on Icon Premo and Resmed Elite. I got the Premo / Nose mask from F & P. Hopefully the first night will be OK.

It's a good, solid machine.........I like how they don't take up a lot of real estate on the bedside table.........I am sure you'll like it

I was considering the same options between and F & P Auto and a Resmed Airsense 10, i went for the resmed much for the reasons tangle hose supplied.
I found the Resmed quieter as my wife is a really light sleeper and noticed the difference between the two. The humidifier function was better on the F & P but the resmed still did ok as well.
I went with a F & P Mask because the Resmed Air fit N10 Nasal just didn't have the support or elbow joint and felt like i was getting pulled around by the hose.
Im up in Auckland and my final pick was Resmed Airsense 10 and F & P Eson nasal mask for $2500NZD.

Hi Ransid,

Thanks for your reply. I'm gonna stick with my F & P as this is the recommended machine by Sleepwell Clinic. Nice to hear a member here is from AKL. I'm also using the Eson mask atm but I really find it uncomfortable. Heve you tired the nasal pillows?
