Old stuff and the real research doesn't conclude that.
It just says they haven't pinned down what causes it except that it is probably something else in wheat.

Judging from how my friends act, I long suspected "gluten-sensitivity" was a marketing fraud.

So you clicked on the link to the study in the business mag article and actually read the doctors' study?

If you slip some gluten into my wife's food without her knowledge she comes out in itchy rashes.

This happens when she is unaware such as if a restaurant menu doesn't state food contains gluten.

So personally I would be very skeptical of an article that says it is only the nocebo effect.

And all those people paying more for gluten-free food are doing it because they love their IBS symptoms. Right.

Really need the full scale report to make any type of true critical analysis. Many times (not always), there are flaws in the study that isn't spotted in the abstract.

And they also love the great taste.

There is a fair amount of evidence that many of the people who eschew gluten do so
less from an actual diagnosis, but out of erroneous beliefs/fads.
The benefits are very significant for those who genuinely cannot tolerate gluten,
but appear to be only imaginary for the rest, whose demand has helped make GF
much more available and affordable to those who need it. That is a good thing.

I learn from my new friends here that Americans are superstitious like rural people (like mal de ojo) in my home country. Science is not well accepted upon Americans.

But I still love my new American friends.

@Samaniego: +1, regretfully.
Especially in those states which have replaced science in public school curricula with creationism.
I guess those kids will still be available for the jobs no one else wants.

If the meat is breaded, or even has the slightest crust, gluten could be present!
It is cheap, and processors use any excuse to use starches, especially the cheap ones.

The recent gluten free movement is largely a fad based off ignorance. The percentage of the population that actually has a problem with gluten/wheat is so small you would laugh if I told you.

My wife has had GI problems most of her life. It wasn't until two years ago, she discovered it was triggered by gluten. Her going GF is not a fad, she would much rather enjoy my home made pasta, but if she did, it would affect her before dessert was served. To take the Celiac test would require her to go back to eating wheat products for 6 months which is something she has declined to do.

Some people have jumped on the FadWagon, in reality, that has helped her cause in that there are now more places that are GF friendly and the cost of GF products is beginning to come down.

Do you think she has celiac disease? It's a terrible condition. I am glad she has more options, but too bad the options did not come other ways instead of from hypochondriacs.

I have a friend that has celiac disease (official diagnosis) and it irritates me that other non-celiac friends constantly express fears of gluten and feel morally superior by avoiding gluten.

BTW, I avoid grains just because of the insulin response and lack of nutrition.

the fact that 'woo gluten free' is a fad chanted by the ignorant doesn't have anything at all to do with the small segment of the population that actually has a physical problem with gluten. condolences to your wife.
