F&P Icon or S10?

Post by Lock Robster » Wed Jan 14, 2015 3:20 pm

Hi everyone! Been lurking for awhile, love this very supportive community of masked men and women and children too I guess. Anyway, I get to choose a new machine, very exciting! Insurance covers (thankfully), so money is not an issue. Not overly interested in data gathering and analysis only because I just haven't enough time. I do like bells, whistles, quality and quiet (as does my wife), so your comparisons between the F&P Icon and the Resmed S10 (although now it's officially called the Airsense 10, right? The auto-adjusting version.) are humbly invited. Is the S10 so much better or imbued with pixie magic to justify its higher list price? Once again, if all other things being equal, I like as ninja-quiet a machine as possible. Thanks for any and all advice! Robster

that's kind of a tough one........I have both the F&P Auto Icon and the Airsense Autoset. I like both machines, both are nice and quiet, the Airsense has some bells and whistles that aren't really that useful for me like the wireless cellular modem, but all-in-all it's not much different than any other high-end auto machine. One thing I like better about the F&P is that the humidifier tub is a bit larger, holds more water, on some very dry nights where I am located I do end up running the Airsense humidifier dry unless I do a top off in the middle of the night which is kinda a pain in the rear, whereas I don't run out of water with the Icon because of the slightly larger capacity of the tub.

If your decision is based on price the F&P wins hands down, the Airsense is a great machine, but the ResMed pricing is sky high and a bit on the ridiculous side. But if on the other hand you are more interested in the quality of data for Sleepyhead download and keeping a really close eye on your data the Airsense would be the winner. The Airsense will break down your AHI numbers and flag Central Apneas, the F&P does not distinguish between Central or Obstructive, it will just register an "Apnea Event" so in that sense the Airsense wins. Also the Airsense For Her model will flag RERAs (Respiratory Effort Arousals) as an additional feature, and it has a milder pressure response that is supposed to be better suited for women, but I know some guys have bought that model because of this third mode, or breathing algorithm and the RERA reporting capability.

As far as my sleep comfort both machines are very good and breath very nice, the kind of breathing where you sorta forget your using the PAP machine, so from a sleep quality standpoint it's a toss up.

One last issue is that I think the F&P is a little easier to pack for travel because the power converter is built into the machine itself so all you have is a regular power cord with no brick in it............the Airesense has a converter "brick" in the cord so it's bulkier to pack for travel in that respect, but that's really not too big an issue in the overall sense of things.

A belated thanks to Tangled Hose for his/her learned reply. I am going to go with the Resmed, although I just learned I have to wait until June due to insurance issues. Shucks.

On an unrelated note, and I am a newbie so I would assume this has been talked about before: I was having trouble making the Airfit F10 not leak. It got so bad I reverted back to the Quattro FX. However, and here is the good part: I used the F10 headgear on the Quattro and got remarkably improved performance in terms of non-leakage. The lower straps on the F10 headgear are much longer than on the Quattro headgear and as such I was able to wrap them farther back on my head, which for me at least kept the lower portion of the mask in place much better than before. I have almost zero leaks now, so wife and dog have stopped plotting to smother me with a pillow.

If someone wants to comment on this, as in "yes, but here is an even better idea newbie" then please feel free.

This blog offers hints that can be useful for many different full face masks.

I started with the Icon then after a month requested a switch to the S9. I'm sure the Icon is a fine machine (I think the build is actually better than the S9). But when I got mine Sleepyhead couldn't read the Icon reliably. And I thought the menu system on the S9 was a lot easier to navigate. That being said, if I could find a really good deal on a used Icon I would probably get it to use as a backup and travel machine. Also if I was getting a NEW machine I might go with the ICON as I understand the S10 has some bugs.
