colonoscopy

Post by chriml@optonline.net » Wed Jan 07, 2015 7:45 am

I have had sleep apnea for 10 years and I need to go for a colonoscopy. I have it scheduled but forgot to tell him about the sleep apnea. I almost want to cancel the procedure. Can I have the procedure with this problem? Thank you for your help.

check into something called Cologard before you have a colonoscopy. Might not need one, and this test is looking good.

Be sure they know.

Also figure out who's the "attending physician" or whatever the correct term is. Basically, there's one doctor who is God during the procedure and nothing anyone else says matters. Be sure the the supreme being during the procedure and recovery knows you need CPAP and understands you need it during recovery.

How far are they going? Seriously, Just inform the anesthetist of your apnea when they go over your medical history prior to your procedure. Your condition if not a biggie at all. I have endoscopes on a regular basis without any problem. I had a colonoscopy once. I told them that they can do the next one during my autopsy. The prep is the worst part of it.

Good Luck!

You will have 02 during the procedure, so it won't matter much, though if there is an anesthetist present (they aren't always for such things) tell him you have OSA. And they use very short acting sedation now for those procedures so you'll probably not be out for long in Recovery, but again, tell the nurses before you go in.

Do you have any idea how many people have major surg. every day who don't (yet) know they have apnea (including myself yrs ago), and survive? And if you were to cancel this one, what would you do re major stuff (or other smaller ones) you'll possibly need as you get older?

My doctor told me that he normally does not use an anesthesiologist except in the case of people with SA. Be sure that your doctor knows.

There are different anesthesia protocols for colonoscopy such as conscious sedation that may not require ventilation. Always good to let the doctor know you use CPAP, but unlikely you will need it for this procedure as patients are not normally deeply anesthetized as they would be for a surgery.

Be aware that Cologuard is not perfect... in fact, here at the Mayo Clinic, my doc told me that it's better to do the colonoscopy right off the bat. If Cologuard detects something, you'll need to have the other one anyway to find out more, and it takes longer to find out what's going on.
On another note, I recently had an endoscopic procedure, and when I asked about that, my doc said just to make them aware that I do use it at home... when I had my cataract surgery in September, eye doc told me I didn't need it.

I'm going in for a colonoscopy next month. I think it's more important (at least for me) that they know i have a pacemaker and they're aware of my medications and how long i've been off Plavix for my stents. I never even gave it much thought about mentioning the apnea... like mentioned alot of people that go through that procedure probably have apnea and not even know it.

Yes, you're in a whole other category though.

I asked the doc to do it without sedation, not only because I have Sleep Apnea, but because I did not want to waste another day getting clear of the drugs. I did sign the statement saying the Doc could use whatever drug he decided to use, if it became necessary. Doc said he did a lot of these procedures with the patient awake without drugs, I think it was forty percent. It is not really painful, but there are some uncomfortable moments when they pump air in. Feels like I need a BM, but of course that is not going to happen at that moment.

If they do sedation, they will monitor all your vitals, if something starts, I am pretty sure they would quickly intubate the patient, put a tube into your windpipe, and then you will not have sleep apnea. Should get a very complete bit of sleep, like a mask with no leaks, and the proper pressure.

Like the others have said, the preparation is the worst. Much worse than the first Colonoscopy as they want the patient cleaner. That was a night without sleep. I went to spend the night before at the overnite hotel associated with hospital. I walked to the clinic that early morning.

I have had a number of procedures with minimal sedation. EGD (down the throat for stomach ulcers) needed some stuff in my throat to prevent pain, and to keep me from gagging. Several Heart Catheterizations, by way of the large vein in the groin. I guess I missed my opportunity for a really good nap, but I got to watch a live show on the screen.

Congratulations on having the courage to do the procedure. I had a good friend die of colon cancer, because of delaying the Colonoscopy until it was too late. Floyd I still miss you.

This has been discussed here before. As mentioned above, just let your doctor know prior to the procedure. Depending on where/how this is being done you may want to call ahead of time to alert the staff, just in case their procedures are different for SA patients, but I doubt they will be. No need to cancel. I've had a couple since starting on CPAP, best sleep I get!

Just had my fourth colonoscopy, first since starting CPAP and first with an anesthesiologist - told him about CPAP and he said no issues with the drugs I was given - Fenergan and Propifol.

Apparently, I was conscious during mine, but very relaxed, and totally amnesiac.
I am told I never stopped talking.
