Win8.1 on new PC

Post by n0hardmask » Fri Dec 26, 2014 1:41 pm

Howdy and hope Y'all enjoyed a blessed Christmas, Sorry for not posting sooo long (history below for interested- longish post).
Since my Win 8 laptop suffered a broken screen, I bought a new win 8.1 laptop. While I try to use my xPAP every night, regularity has not been there (pain issues, below).
What I did experience was my XPAP rejecting my SD card. Tried different and even a new one before remembering the Mac habit of adding file/s to the card. Once I found and erased the Volume Information file, that was solved.
?Anybody know where to turn off Win8 writing Vol Info files on removable media?

Some history- the longer part. Currently am still recovering from back surgery on L4/L5, and doing core strengthening exercises to get back strength lost over decades of limping around with a bad back.
Before that, it's been a year and half since posting. In July '13, I retired early from US Govt- early due to worsening back and broken marriage. I had an idea how bad the back was; not nearly how close divorce was.
Wife of 40+ years had walked out without a word in Nov '11 and in August '13 filed for divorce. (Didn't get surgery until late July '14) Finished off my back trying to prepare house for sale, and moving myself to a small apartment, along with 2 dogs.
Despite the judge writing the final decision on 19 March '14, the final decree hasn't been signed, thanks to ex’s do-nothing attorney and constipated court system. (TMI ?)
Part of my cost control after my paycheck ended was dropping DSL phone line and internet. Most of my posting to CpapTalk was from work, anyway, The back and other ‘distractions’ keep me exhausted and hurting.

I have missed this community and hope to look in from time to time. I’ve worn out 3 or 4 SleepWeaver masks so far, and am trying to do the same on the Pad-A-Cheek liners on my FitLife TFM. My rocky nights mean lots of leaks and frequently taking off the mask for part or most of many nights. The good news is my AHI is usually below 2; at one point hovered near 1. It’ll get better when my back isn’t such a bother. earl aka n0hardmask

Try this link on the System Volume info,

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/prevent-s ... folder-usb

It should work with SD cards as well.

easiest way to just slide the write protect tab to the lock position before putting it in the computer and unprotecting it before putting it in the cpap
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Get the Clinicians manual here : http://apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap-press ... tup-manual

Thanks, SGearheart

Apparently I don't have Pro edition; probably Home 64bit. Appreciate the quick response, earl

There are some links in my signature line that might help you stop Win8 from eating SD cards. I'm not sure they work, so try them and let us know.

Thanks, Archangle I found out earlier that the gpedit function doesn't exist in my win8 version (presumably home edition). So I've resorted to using the LOCK on the sd card; and until I forget to unlock it, I'll do fine.
Have a SAFE New Year, Y'all!!

I'm traveling and not using my home pc but if you go the link above at windowsclub and read to the bottom you'll find there is another option that worked on my version. It involved modification of the registry, and that is not advised for a novice.

Worked for me but remember to back up your registry before you make any changes. I made the alterations just in case I forgot to lock the SD card. Wouldn't you know, it took 3 weeks but I did forget to lock the card on one occasion, luckily the fix worked and prevented my 8.1 from adding unwanted files. G'luck if you tackle the reg changes.
