Chest Pain Upon Waking

Post by MsCJBC » Sat Dec 20, 2014 5:55 pm

I have finally gotten to a point where I am sleeping for several hours at a time with my cpap, now I have noticed I have chest pain and a strange breathless feeling when I first wake. It has been going away within an hour or so. I am wondering, is this just my body getting used to the machine, or something to be worried about?

Yes that's pretty common especially on nights with higher AHI's.

The muscles in my chest wall were sore at first from breathing more deeply than I was used to.
It went away quickly.

Thanks, that's a relief! I also have atrial fibrillation so anything with the chest sets off my paranoid-hypochondria button.

It would probably be helpful if you would tell us what your machine pressure settings are (or put them in your profile).
Are you monitoring your therapy with software to "see" what's going on during the night? If not, I'd highly recommend it.
What you described has been reported numerous times over the years by new users, so in some respect it's fairly "normal".

If you have Afib, I recommend you see your Cardiologist about any chest pain

Don't forget that us CPAPers still suffer from the same medical problems that non-apneacs do. If you blame everything on CPAP, you could miss the symptoms of an unrelated medical condition.

Yes, with the A-fib, you really should be freaking out.
That is sort of important--always good to mention that little thing first thing off!
Go ahead and call the doc, roll up to the nearest ER, you have a great excuse!

Sorry, I should have been more clear. My Afib is very mild and well controlled with medication, also,I can tell when I am having an Afib episode and this feeling is nothing at all like it. The feeling I have had is more like the chest pain I used to have after a night of heavy smoking (no, I no longer smoke =) )

At any rate, the chest pain has totally gone away now.
