New sleep study shows no sleep apnea!
New sleep study shows no sleep apnea!
I have had two overnight sleep studies, one in 2000 and another in 2005, both showedAHI around 21 with recommended pressure setting of 14. I recently had an in home study and it showed AHI around 1.5. Followed up with a second in home study three days later, after not using CPAP (they thought maybe Not using CPAP for 3 days would show I still had sleep apnea). The results were the same. I'm thinking now (and so is Dr) of doing an in lab overnight. Is it possible for sleep apnea to go away? My weight is the same as it was in 2005. I suppose I could look at it as good news but after being on CPAP for 15 years I'm a little nervous to believe this. I have been using the RemStar Pro for 8 years and was looking to upgrade, but now they are telling me based on my results Medicare will not approve a new unit. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I can't seem to find any items on the forum that relate to similar occurrences

I believe that would be the best option. And, it would be a good idea of not using CPAP for several nights (as you noted) before the in-lab study.......CPAP use can have a residual or carry-over effect for awhile. The other thing that needs to be monitored is blood-oxygen content. Theoretically, it shouldn't be low if you're not having a bunch of apneas, but some people just don't get enough oxygen when they sleep.scaram wrote:I have had two overnight sleep studies, one in 2000 and another in 2005, both showedAHI around 21 with recommended pressure setting of 14. In any case, I wouldn't consider selling the equipment anytime soon.
I don't know about you, but I can't sleep without mine attached to my face. I'm not sure what I'd do if all of a sudden I was diagnosed as not having OSA. I think I'd just keep using it......because I sleep so much better.

My home sleep test showed slightly before 5 AHI in May 2014. Then I had a lab sleep study, which also showed below 5. Somehow I was prescribed an APAP. For some reason, it helped. It is only two months after a follow-up visit with my sleep doctor when I learned that I also have a moderate UARS in addition to the very mild OSA I was told about.scaram wrote:I have had two overnight sleep studies, one in 2000 and another in 2005, both showedAHI around 21 with recommended pressure setting of 14. Home study means a squat

Do you monitor your therapy with sleepyhead or some other software, if so , turn the pressure down to 4 and sleep with it for a few nights and see what the results are.
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Depending on which "Pro" he's using, the answer could be yes or no. The "plain" Pro of 2005 (and before) was non-data-capable and much like the "Plus". The Pro 2 which came out in 2005 (like the ones I use) is fully data capable. The M Series Pro was also fully data capable. None of these machines are capable of using Sleepyhead, but can be used with various versions of Encore (Pro, Viewer, Basic, etc.). Unfortunately, the oldest "plain" Pro will only give hours used.grayghost4 wrote:Do you monitor your therapy with sleepyhead or some other software, if so , turn the pressure down to 4 and sleep with it for a few nights and see what the results are.

Re: New sleep study shows no sleep apnea!
Were you tired after five nights off CPAP (I assume if you had a sleep study, then three days off CPAP and then another study = five consecutive nights off CPAP)? If you have apnea you probably would have been tired, I should think. If you were not tired after not using CPAP, did you display any other symptoms of apnea on those five nights?Followed up with a second in home study three days later, after not using CPAP
Do you know if your pattern of sleeping was different on the nights you were off CPAP? Like, did you snore, thrash around or head to the toilet any more or less than on CPAP?
Any other health issues or changes since your previous sleep study in 2005? Especially any circulation, head, throat, or chest issues / changes?
If you have no apnea symptoms and two studies show you have no apnea, then it'd be unsurprising if Medicare was questioning whether you actually have apnea or not.
But if you have apnea symptoms and two negative tests, that's curious and the quality of the test may need to be questioned in the first instance.
Re: New sleep study shows no sleep apnea!
Thanks Much for all the advice!! To answer some of your questions:
I was not terribly tired after being off CPAP for a few nights although getting to sleep was a problem
I tired sleeping without CPAP again last night and was pretty much awake until 4 am; threw in the towel, put the mask on and turned on the machine and promptly fell asleep. I wonder if the body gets so used to the noise, air pressure, whatever that going without is a problem. Agree with Den
I think the suggestion to turn the air pressure down and use software to see what is happening is a great idea. I have a RemstarPro M series so I guess I can do some looking and see how to do this. I also have a Mac so that could be a problem if software is only PC related
I may just go ahead and do the overnight study just to put things to bed (oh that's bad).
I have no heath issues and am the same weight as the previous sleep study
Anyway thanks again for all your help and happy holidays!

Re: New sleep study shows no sleep apnea!
You've got years of habit and expectation of pressure on your face and air being pushed to you: any kind of major change to conditions can disrupt sleep for a while.I wonder if the body gets so used to the noise, air pressure, whatever that going without is a problem
Up to you what you do with whatever advice you might get after all the examinations are done, but comfort would be a novel reason to use CPAP!!!
All the best.
