cpap w/oxygen
I live in Nashville Tn, I am 52 year old male using cpap w/oxygen for the past 28 months, when I did my sleep study I had 82 ahi and oxygen sats drop in the 20's ( not a typo ) I went to see sleep dr. a couple of months ago and he said no need for another sleep study ( I have a card on my machine) that shows ahi between 1and 2 of course it doesn't show sats. two times I have forgotten to turn on oxygen on at night and I can tell it the next day plus waking up to go to restroom if oxy. is not on. I asked the dr. to look at my records again to see that my sats were in the 20's when tested, he looked at me kind of crazy and looked raised hie eyes and said yes in fact that is what it was. Since using cpap I have, with help of weight watchers lost 150 lbs. which has made a great improvement in my life even though still being 120lbs over weight now. My cpap was set at 18 for the pressure I tried to lower the setting as I lost weight but my sleeping started suffering so now I have it set at 15.5 and humidity set on 4 w/oxy. at 2.
Now with all of this information anyone have similar experience and how can I go about traveling with less luggage the cpap is small but carrying the oxygen machine is a pain. I only need this at night my oxygen is good while awake. I also use the Zest nasal mask and have to use a chin strap which works sometimes better than others. Will the small oxygen machines work and where can you find one that is affordable. I think I will be on this for Life which is a bummer but better than the alternative.
I was having concerns about my heart rate dropping low so they put a halter monitor on me for 48 hours and my heart rate drops as low as 36 at night and had a few flutters so did the tread mill test ran my heart rate up to 146, doc said I just have a wide range for my heart rate and to keep up the good work.?
I'd like to hear from some others idea's and experiences. Thanks
Surely I am not the only one with these similar apnea challenges. I use the machine (s) every night as you can see from stats I need to, but the important thing is it works. Do any of you get tested regularly, or is it just a one time deal.

Re: cpap w/oxygen
have you investigated the travel size oxygen concentrators?

Re: cpap w/oxygen
I have an O2 concentrator for home use, but my de-sats are not as dramatic as yours so when I travel I just take the cpap.
I would suggest you look for one of the new small portable concentrators, and picking up an overnight recording pulse oximeter would also be a good idea in your situation. There are many threads on the forum about the overnight recording oximeters ....most are using one of the Contec models like the CMS 50 F or later model......lots of info on those if you do a brief search on the forum. They aren't too expensive and you could keep an eye on your O2 status at night, maybe test and contrast with O2 on versus off, while using the cpap of course. Using the cpap my O2 levels don't drop to badly that I am concerned with not using the O2 when I travel as long as I am using the cpap.
Be careful and use your own common sense though because it sounds like you have a much more serious case than I do......maybe you'll have to get a small concentrator for travel........do a google search for travel oxygen concentrator and that should get you going.

Make sure any concentrator produces enough oxygen for your present (and possible future) needs.

Can you fill in your equipment profile in text format. It will help all of us help you.
If you have a data capable machine you can (should) download SleepyHead software so you can monitor your therapy every night yourself. With a recording oximeter you will have more than half of your own in home sleep lab. Since you will be sleeping in your own bed and monitoring long term trends as well as details, your information will be more valuable than a one night snapshot in a strange bed at a sleep lab.
I also use O2 with my PAP but do not bring O2 with when I travel.

What about a small oxygen bottle for travel ?
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

They have a bad habit of running out at the wrong time. May also be an issue on a plane. I never tried to bring one through TSA.

portable battery powered concentrators are the preferred thing these days, (at least, if you believe the marketing info) they're lighter and more convenient than a decent sized o2 bottle, and don't require the recharging infrastructure.grayghost4 wrote:What about a small oxygen bottle for travel ?

Re: cpap w/oxygen
Do you need a larger volume of O2 with CPAP? It would seem that the mask leakage would dilute the oxygen, and you'd need more liters per minute of O2.

I sleep with oxygen and have a concentrator at home. when I travel, my supplier has portable consontrators that they loan out at no additional costs. very convients and they're pretty light weight. you might want to check with your supplier.

Re: cpap w/oxygen
Your o2 company should be able to make travel arrangements for you, in which the o2 is delivered where you will be. This can be a challenge for smaller o2 companies as they often have to contract with another company, however this an everyday thing for the national 02 companies. There are even companies that handle o2 while on a cruise or overseas.
The portable o2 concentrators are good, however most POCs are on demand systems and can't be used nocturnally.
No you don't need to increase the o2 amount just because it's being bled into cpap.

Thank you all for the reply. I should look into the recording data I have looked at it some but it seemed a bit difficult. I guess like any thing it seems tough until you dig into it. I will have to write down the equipment I use and show it in my profile.
Thanks

There is something I don't understand. Is there a medical reason that on-demand O2 systems can't be used with CPAP at night? Or is the reason an engineering one? I can imagine a sensing/valving/delivery mechanism that would deliver my needed 1.0 lpm O2 on demand at night with the CPAP with minimal dilution or loss. Perhaps the demand hasn't been expressed in the marketplace, yet. Here's my demand:
I'm male, 67 years, skinny as a rail, an 8-year user although probably a 20-year needer. Now I find that my O2 desaturation at 84% does not recover even if I'm on CPAP and sleeping comfortably for 8 hours. I wake up needing a nap, even with O2. Obviously a heart condition but I'm doing the best I can with respiratory therapy. I live at 7300 feet and love working at 10,000 feet off the grid. I can get battery powered CPAP and battery powered CONSTANT FLOW O2 but can't go on my typical 3-week jaunts using tanks. Battery power for the O2 is not really practical if I have to waste the power generating O2 that I'm not going to breathe.

Re: cpap w/oxygen
I think you need to discuss this with your doctor... they're the ones who prescribe 02 when necessary, and it's not something I think you should be using on your own, with or without Cpap, even if you somehow have access.
Many, if not most machines and masks do have places to hook up to 02 along with Cpap, so it's not a question of they're being incompatible or something... but you also referred to some technical terms which may make my answer irrelevant!
