Fifth Night on CPAP

Post by Logies101 » Tue Dec 16, 2014 8:06 pm

Tonight will be my fifth night on CPAP and after two nights of hell in the beginning, the last two nights have been pretty good. In fact I slept for 7 hours last night waking only occasionally to re position the mask. Since I slept so well I'm wondering why I want to take long (3hr) naps. both days. Still feeling tired during the day and it seems like I can't get enough sleep now, am I trying to make up for lost sleep from the past 8+ years or is this common? Just wondering what your experience was in the beginning. How long did it take you to feel energized during the day.

My experience it takes a week of really good sleep to get over the sleep deprivation. YMMV.

What does your machine display show for AHI for each of these nights? Leak icon?

Last night's AHI showed 1.7 and leakage of 11 if I'm reading it correctly.

I really craved sleep once I got my CPAP dialed in. It feels so good to get restful sleep after decades of apnea!

That's good. Any dry mouth?

Dry mouth, sore jaw from chin strap, freezing face from the air blowing on me but other than that it was all good.

Dry mouth and leak of 11 probably indicates some air escaping through your mouth. If it is not waking to you up it is probably ok until you get used to the machine and then can address some lagging leaks. Under 24 Resmed says the machine can handle it, but it might be waking you up. When I first started I also felt even more tired. My body seemed to realize it could now get sleep and so that is all I wanted. For the first 6 months if I got less than 7 hrs I really felt it too, but after a year that seems to have disappeared as well. Hang in there, sounds like it is working for you.

Ouch. How tight do you have the straps?

Where is the air coming from? Is it leaking out between the mask and your nostrils? Or is it coming out of the mask vent?

I'm finding that as I slowly up pressure, I'm noticing that my daytime sleepiness is fading...and that's without the 5hour energy shots...I'm currently at 9cm-15...subject to change.

It toke me 6 months of trying to find the right pressure because of my incompetent doctor and 6 months more once I found the right pressure to wake up refreshed. I was a mess when I started CPAP.

Chin strap:
Chicago Granny, I had that chin strap ratcheted up all the way lol. I have since ditched the darn thing and upgraded to taping instead, it worked like a charm. ( thanks SleepDC for your in depth description on how to do that.)

Cold air:
The cold air was coming from the mask vent so I put a sleep mask on so my eyes didn't freeze up like snowballs. Any ideas of why the air is so cold? I keep the room cold so maybe a hose cover Is needed, as I have seen some use? Now I have my nose, mouth, and eyes covered what's next earplugs? Maybe I should just get one of those brass deepwater diving helmets (see avatar) and be done with it. This is a whole new underground sort of life I had no idea of until a few days ago. Interesting if nothing else.

Leaks:
Yes I think the leaks are waking me up so I guess that will subside as I become a little more experienced with tweaking things. Everyone on this forum have been a life saver for newbies like me, thank you all so much.

Are you using the ClimateLine heated hose or the regular hose? I forget.
If your bedroom is cold then the air coming in through the machine is going to be colder and it's harder to get it warmed up without a heated hose.
If you are using a heated hose then maybe need to increase the temperature.
If you aren't using a heated hose then by all means consider some sort of hose cozy to help the air in the hose from cooling down because of the bedroom air temp.

Back before I got my first heated hose I used a regular hose and even with the max setting of 5 my nose got painfully cold (I also keep a really cold bedroom in the winter) and would wake me up because it was so cold. I called it ice cube nose.
It was so bad that a hose cozy didn't totally relieve the discomfort but then when I say my bedroom is cold...it's like maybe 50 to 55 degrees and the air was just so cold coming in that it couldn't get warmed up.
Best money I ever spent was when I got a heated hose that winter.

I have the regular hose and yes I keep the bedroom pretty cold as I can't sleep otherwise. Was about to buy the hose cozy as I'm getting frostbite but I'll opt for the heated hose instead. Thank you for the input.
