AHI / Hypopnias / Breathing level

Post by Thomas P » Tue Dec 16, 2014 11:06 am

How can I show an AHI of 22 with readings (Sleepyhead):
Obstructive 0.00
Hypopnea 8.56
Clear Airway 0.00

Also, why are Hypopnea given full credit in the AHI index when they are not as serious as apneas?

I have been a meditator for over 40 years and the meditation reduces my breathing way below what would be considered normal when I meditate. I'm wondering if the hypopnea are the result of my reaching a kind of meditation level of breathing as a result of my body being used to doing that in meditation.
As a matter of fact, when they take my blood pressure reading, I often meditate and it comes out very low. It is normal when I don't.

It would be helpful if we could see the SleepyHead report that you are seeing.
You will need to register here at the forum to be able to post an image of your report so we can see what you are seeing.
Also would be helpful to know which equipment you are using.
For your AHI to be different..there's something else on your report besides the 3 data points you just now mentioned. Something is missing or calculations are incorrect...or something.

Hyponeas are indeed very important especially if you have a large number of them back to back and/or the duration of the flow reduction is very long. Don't assume that just because they mean a lesser degree of flow reduction that it doesn't matter.
Significant oxygen desats can happen with hyponeas too. Arousals can happen which trash sleep quality.
That's why sleep studies also count them.

Pugsy, thank you for the reply. I don't know how to post an image of my report. I am registered. i'm not the greatest on a computer.
However, I went to my Daily Statistics and I found what may be the reason. It shows 13.78 "Unclassified Apnea."
The program that my doctor's office uses just has the two classifications. Hypopnias and Apneas. Their data for the last 44 days shows 40 nights with apnea readings of about 5 or under however, because of the hypopneas, my AHI on their data for the entire period is 16 (AHI 16.1; HI 9.8; AI 6.3).
I am using a Resmed S9 VPAP.
Thanks again.

You may be registered but you aren't logged in.
Look at your user ID and look at mine...

Unclassified apneas from the ResMed machines are usually associated with large leaks up around 30 L/min or more.
Meaning the machine can sense that some sort of event is happening but it can't tell which kind.

That would be ResScan and actually there are 3 classifications if you go a bit deeper.
Hyponeas
and Apneas but the Apnea classification in ResScan will have sub categories of Central Apnea and Obstructive apnea with all but the S9 VPAP Adapt machines.

If you are seeing that many hyponeas then your therapy is sub optimal.

To post images of our reports we use screen shots...
Screen shot thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=81072&p=737779#p737779
Basically host the images on some place like Photobucket or imgur.com (free) and then copy the bbc (IMG) code and put that in your post.

So if you are seeing "Unclassified Apneas" and your machine is a regular S9 VPAP S or Auto...check your leak line.

My initial sleep study put me at an AHI of 53 - all hypopneas, zero apneas. That's a bit extreme and not my norm (my sleep study experience was horrid), but it's still severe sleep apnea.
