Sore nose and itchy nose from nasal pillow mask

Post by EmilySleeps » Mon Dec 15, 2014 5:07 pm

I use a nasal pillow mask, and I'm seeking advice relating to two issues (neither is hugely important, but both are annoying and affecting my sleep and my well being when I get up):

1)My nose gets very sore and sensitive from the force of the air pressure distending my nostrils. This is only an issue when the pressure ramps up to high levels, but then the force is so strong that my nose aches and is sensitive to touch - even long after I've woken up.

2)The silicone inserts that go into the nose move around from the air pressure, particularly when I roll over, and then they tickle the inside of my nose. The automatic reflex is to rub or scratch your nose, but I can't because the nose pillow is in the way. This wakes my up at night and gets so annoying that I have to remove the nose pillow to rub my nose, and then have to readjust it and try to get back to sleep.

Thanks for any input!

With any mask it pays to keep those nasal hairs short cause they will make your nose tickle with the air passing over them.

Try larger pillows if they're moving around - as big as you can tolerate...

The last two nights, the tickling sensation in my nose became so strong that I had sneezing attacks and had to remove the mask. This happens when the air pressure gets stronger - I think the silicon nose inserts start moving around and tap against the inside of my nostrils. Has anyone else experienced this?? If so, how did you manage it? Thanks!

Thanks, palerider and squid13, but nose hair is not an issue for me!

well, everybody has nose hair, even if it's not hanging out in large unsightly chunks, and the air from the cpap tends to rustle it.... and your brain translates that as 'itch! must scratch!'

Yep we all have em, some less chunkier than others
I found a great way to deal with nose hair is not to pluck or trim, but to wax. It's not as bad as it sounds believe me. Just purchase one of those little waxing machines from a beauty supply, apply the warm wax with the little applicator to the area just inside the nose ( not deep down ) and use the cloth provided to take off all those little noticeable and unnoticeable hairs. Your nose inside will feel like a baby's behind and no more tickles. The hairs grow back much slower and finer, works great!

Try a nasal mask, remember not every mask works for everyone, and myself and my others enjoy the comforts of an F&P Eson nasal mask, my point is try something different , you are a nose breather so if the pillows tickle try a mask.
Good Luck and Happy Sleeping
