Nuance Gel Nasal Pillow masks slips off -- any advice?

Post by Phantasos » Wed Nov 26, 2014 3:39 pm

Hello:

I am a newbie. I used several masks during my titration & Nuance Gel Nasal Pillow seemed most comfortable. I now have my machine and the mask, and got quite used to it in just 10 days. The problem is that, often, while I sleep the mask slips off, so the number of use-hours ends being quite low. Any advice? I tightened the mask as far as I can go without squishing my nose, which is expressly counter-indicated. Maybe I can add some extra strap and/or combine with a different headgear?

My machine is a AirSense 10 AutoSet CPAP with built-in humidifier. Is there any way to make it sound an alarm when the mask is off? (Regular or "clinical" options are both fine

Many thanks for any advice! -- P

I am a relative newbie as well. I just started using nasal pillows a few weeks ago and also use a chinstrap as I try to teach myself to breath through my nose. I found that putting my chinstrap on over the headgear instead of under helps with stability without having to over tighten.

Make sure your face and the gel straps are squeaky clean before you go to bed. If there is any facial oil, dirt or make-up on your face, it will slide. Even with squeaky clean face, mine slides around a little bit while asleep as my face pores make oil at night, then it "squeals" enough to wake me up briefly and I fix it by putting the pillow(s) back into the nare(s), & push the strap around my head in back where it is supposed to be (right over the "knot" in the very back part of your head - kind of where your neck starts to join your head in the middle of the back of your head) ,then go right back to sleep. I don't know about the Air-Sense since I use S-9 but the machine shouldn't make any difference. Sometimes the strap on your headpiece slides around on your hair (or lack of hair). That's what I do to tame the slithering beast. Other nasal pillow masks do not usually slide as much, so if it bothers you a lot, you might want to try a Swift FX mask, and someone has a new sealed one for sale rather inexpensively right now on this board if they still have it.

I really liked the nuance pro pillows but have switched to the airfit P10. I have really super high pressure so I was having trouble keeping the nuance on. I ended up taking a chin strap that I didn't like and cutting a hole in it. I then threaded the pillow hose through the hole. I made my hole big enough so it didn't cover the venting. The chin strap would cover my mask and did a good job holding it in place. It's kind of hard to describe it. Hopefully that makes sense. You could use other material but just make sure you do not cover the venting on the mask.
