New Machine (to me) arrives tomorrow

Post by DaveInGA » Tue Nov 25, 2014 7:12 pm

My new S9 Autoset with heated humidifier and Climatine hose arrives tomorrow. Bought a Respironics Comfortgel nasal mask size large to go with it. So for tomorrow night I'm planning on starting with this:

Range - 7cmH20-20cmH20 - during my Clinicals, I tried out a nasal mask and my nasal passaged opened fully up starting at 7cmh20 while awake. Figured this was a good starting bottom range.

Setting - Autotitrating PAP (APAP?) - not totally familiar with the slang nor what the manufacturer calls this mode, as it came out after I stopped work to take care of my Dad.

Humidifier - heated air and moisture (I'm still debating the heat level for the humidifier. I live in Northeast Georgia about an hour south of the SC border, I'm hot natured, heat up as I sleep like a toaster and like the room cold. In addition, there's a 30% chance of rain for tomorrow and 80% for Thanksgiving day.)

Mask - adjusted tight enough to seal properly and no more to start.

Data gathering - based on suggestions from Pugsy, I'm planning on starting with ResScan software and seeing how it goes. I'll gather data for 5 days minimum before looking at making any changes.

Please let me know what you think.

Sleepyhead is also a viable option, and you're right - your humidity setting may be crucial. Trying low, medium and high for a few days each is probably the only way to go/know.

Great choice of kit BTW

Welcome. For many of us, a good place to start is in the middle.
I found my Goldilocks point is good year-round, it just needs more or less water.

Since you will be using the Climateline hose...I suggest simply letting it do it's automatic humidity delivery and you adjust the temperature to your comfort level.
Don't worry about what the ambient humidity might be outside...go with what works for the majority of the people and that's what the automatic setting delivers.
Worry about minute humidity adjusts only if it is determined that the defaults don't suit your needs.

The factory default for when the ClimateLine hose is attached is for "Automatic" which is 80% delivery and you get to adjust the temperature to your comfort level.
I would suggest start with that and see if it works...there's a reason that is the default and that is because it works very well for the bulk of the cpap users.
I like to use a consistent humidity delivery level and not worry about what the humidity is outside. Nasal mucosa also like consistent.

Should you happen to be one of those people whose nasal mucosa isn't particularly happy with 80%...they will let you know real quick and then we can switch over to manual humidity adjustments along with manual temperature adjustments. I would go with the defaults first...there's a really good chance it will work quite well for you if you happen to be like most cpap users.

Welcome neighbor!
I have basically the same setup. The ClimateLine hose was a great addition. I've found, at least for me, leaving the hose set to the "auto" mode and playing with the air temp can greatly effect my sleep. Even 2 degrees from the base 80 degree point has an effect. As far as the reporting software, I have both SleepyHead and ResScan. I've feel that Rescan is a little sparse in what is reported as opposed to SleepyHead. Raw numbers are about the same for both but SleepyHead really shines with its graphs.

Once again, "Welcome" and remember; "Your mileage may vary!"
