OT: No nasal rinse !

Post by rosacer » Mon Nov 24, 2014 5:24 pm

Hi Y'all

I caught the flu or something nasty. I have been experiencing the bad symptoms since last Wednesday. I was getting better but today I woke up feeling dizzy, pain in the back, having tachycardia from walking from my room to the kitchen (I don't live in a palace, it's not far ), feeling weak and cold. All that even after having taken the daily Tylenols I have been taking since it started (2 tylenol arthritis at bed time and at wake up in the morning), other way I had pain all around the body even on the on gums and small cuts on my hand ached as terrible cuts. It is as if each pain was amplified, nasty.

I decided to go see the doctor. He told I have a bronchitis and prescribed rest and antibiotics. What surprises me is he told not to continue using the Neilmed saline rinse, he told it could push up something from the sinuses, to only put salt on water and to boil and breath the vapors.

What is all this, one say something and another say the opposite. I have been doing sinuses rinse for years when I have sinus problems, is this true or only one more bla bla bla bla ?????

Sorry for the details: I have cleaned a yellow or green secretion the last days and it was cleared up when I did the sinus rinse. Now I'm supposed to let all that inside to accumulate?

What do you think or know about this doctor's statement?

Thanks

Rosie

IMHO:
1) if you do nasal rinses with a forced system (like the squeeze bottle), you may push something into sinuses and/or eustachian tubes. So a neti pot which just uses gravity will be better.
2) Make sure your head is bent at least 30 degrees from vertical (in the front).
3) use a 0.9% saline (I like it when salt is buffered with bicarbonate).
4) You need to dry out your nose properly afterwards.

Other than that, I think nasal rinses will work just fine. I recently caught a cold and on one of those days, the congestion was so bad that the water did not flow thru to the other nostril while using the neti pot. But it still helps clear out the congestion from the first nostril. And it helped me sleep better. And it got progressively better the next 2-3 days until its all clear.

YMMV

It's all the about the pressure you put up your nose. Too much and you'll hit your sinuses. I'd use a Nailed bottle and squeeze very gently. Probably do it 2-3 times per day.
