What do you do when you have to be in the hospital

Post by Sleepysuz » Sun Nov 23, 2014 10:43 pm

Planning surgery in the next month and will be in the hospital several nights. Can you bring your machine or do you have to use theirs? I use nasal pillows and can't tolerate a mask. Any pointers? Thanks!

I would use my own equipment, unless the hospital refuses to let you --and I would get my Dr. to intervene.
Unless your nose is going under the knife, there is probably no reason your nasal pillows would not be your best choice.
You want all your stuff as clean as possible if you are taking it along.

+1, have delivered personal CPAP equipment for a number of my home health clients in hospital. Some facilities will require maintenance to clear the electrical components for safety, so you may want to ask about it at (pre-) registration. Think about it this way: it's hard enough getting a decent night's sleep in the hospital, wouldn't you want to bring anything from home that could help in that regard?

Last couple visits, the hospital provided a bilevel cpap for me to use along with a ff mask. Set it up and monitored it while I was using it.

In visits before then, I had my wife bring my own machine into the room once I got one. Never had a problem and they always provided distilled water to use as well.

Since each hospital is different I would start with the admitting doc to find the answer. While I would prefer my own equipment esp my mask; if that is not allowed you will need all of your machine settings esp. machine make & model written down (preferably typed). Incl. mask make/model & size.

I would also (If possible) order new supplies like mask/hose etc and bring them to the hospital still sealed in plastic.

I've read opposite advice which recommends bringing old cpap supplies and then discarding them before leaving the hospital. The reason was to reduce the possibility of picking up weird infections, germs, etc. I would follow that advice especially with the tubing since it has all those external/internal grooves.

Updated because I found the thread I remembered: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=92762&st=0&sk=t&sd= ... 15#p855538

That makes perfect sense... after all hospitals are full of sick people.

If your hospital has a sleep lab maybe (just maybe) you could get them to provide the hose and/or mask (if you feel lucky). Tho I do think I would feel better with my own mask at least.

I took my CPAP with me. They have CPAP's also but they're not going to be anything near what you're used to. If you're sensative about your mask or machine it's best to take it. I was in the hospital for about 37 days this year back in February 4th - March 13th, and a couple of subsequent stays. I was very glad to have my (then) S8 Autoset Vantage and my preferred mask at the time. Plan ahead. I didn't expect to be in the hospital for a hernia surgery any longer than a couple of days, a week at maximum. Complications happen sometimes though. I almost died. I'm lucky to be here.

One day they'll have completely self-contained units on airplanes, hospitals, hotel rooms, etc. where you can just attach your hose and mask and you're off to the races but not quite yet. In the meantime, while we wait for the "Jetson's" capabilities having our own machine is the next best thing.

I did use some kind of CPAP after a surgery in the hospital and I didn't care for that one at all. But your mileage may vary.

This is very true about the distilled water. I had no problem getting that in the hospital. And I'd expect that some hospitals have better machine and mask selections available if you ask them in advance or at registration.

I've never had any luck yet with a FF mask so having the comforts of home (nasal mask and chin strap) was the way to go at the time for me.

Side note: Never had any issues bringing my own equipment and using it. They seem quite impressed when you bring your own stuff from home. One less thing to worry about.

I was recently hospitalized...the first night I was unexpectedly hospitalized after going through the ER and was forced to use their equipment. They gave me a hose and a mask in packages. The machine and hose was fine but the mask sucked. Bring your own equipment if they will allow or at least bring your own mask.
