Talked to my doc about a script... Wish me luck...

Post by AV Junkie » Sat Nov 22, 2014 7:51 pm

So I finally was able to get a message to my primary care doc to talk to her about a prescription for cpap and a mask. ( I didn't have enough events during my study to qualify for the titration part of the study.) I have been using an auto setting machine for a little while now and haven't felt better in years. Lets just hope she gives me a prescription so I can get new complete masks.

Do you realize that ANY doctor or dentist can write a prescription? It does not need to be your primary care doctor.

Well yes, but in real life I don't see most (if any) other profs actually sitting down and writing a script for anyone who is a) not their own patient, b) who they effectively know nothing about medically - that they haven't examined and come to their own conclusions about, and c) who is not going to bring them any income, but could potentially even represent a law suit. Everyone says that any med pro. can write a script, but how many of them ever have (for you) who weren't your regular GP?

Then ask your dentist, if need be. Insurance may not be on board, but that may not even be relevant . . .

Great point Julie.

Initially, I thought that perhaps my cardiologist would be willing to write prescriptions if I needed them but fortunately don't due to being covered for quite awhile. But then I wonder since she runs sleep studies from her office if I would be required to see the sleep doctors.

I would say my dentist would be a 50/50 shot as to whether he would write one.

Maybe if someone tried to get one of these folks to write a prescription, to somehow let them know in an appropriate way that you aren't the suing type of patient. This has worked for me when I tried to get information from doctors that initially was hard to obtain due to what I felt was their concerns about a potential lawsuit. Obviously, your mileage will vary.

Well, I got the response that I was expecting. "I am not allowed to prescribe CPAP to a patient without documented sleep apnea" Oh well.... sometimes the simplest things aggravate me. It's not a drug that I am asking for. Just a prescription for a machine and a mask that allows air to be blown into my nose... Guess I'll have to go another route. Sorry... .Rant over...

Bummer.

Well...we can help you get the masks...which reminds me...I promised to look to see what I might have you can use.
I forgot...Please remind me again if I don't get back with you in a couple of days.
I got side tracked. I won't have my feelings hurt one bit if you send me another note...saying "reminder"

Please post here what you do have in your possession that you are using...
and what you wish to try so that maybe someone else here has a mask they could help you out with.

My stash of donated masks has some pretty slim pickings right now. I don't have any of the newer type of really good masks....out of nasal pillows..out of nasal cushions (like the Wisp)...what I have left are older masks and while they are new and unused they are of older style and while good in their day...they aren't nearly as popular now and for a reason.

Before I had a prescription in hand I definitely considered buying a set of non-prescription mask parts and assembling a mask. Even though I have insurance coverage I have circumvented it at times where the money is not a huge deal, like cushions or filters or a mask. My DME is such a hassle anyway and a monthly nuisance that I am ready to fire them and move on now that I have a proper prescription. I'll probably get a spare machine on my own too. Too important for me not to have one on hand.

I have been checking out posts on my local Craigslist and have a brand new in box zero hour PRS1 560P auto with humidifier that I can offer for $450. It comes with a new sealed Resmed Mirage FX mask as well as hose, filter, SD card, manuals and bag.

Or, if a humidifier is not needed I have another PRS1 560P Auto (no humidifier) with .2 hours on it. It comes with hose, filter, SD card, and bag with a choice of opened masks (Eson, Wisp or Gel Cushion) for $325.

Let me know if you are interested in either and I can post pictures for you here or you can PM me.

Thanks Pugsy!

I have a swift LT Nasal pillow mask and headgear that I have been using. It works ok, I just can't seem to keep it on and my mouth shut at the same time. (I use a chin strap but still keep opening my mouth.) I found someone on craigslist and bought a few masks from him. (Was only able to try one because the other one is too small.) I tried the mirage active LT and liked it. I just think it is a little small. (It's a medium and it pinches my nose at the top) I also have a profile lite that is defiantly too small. (It is size MS) Haven't used it. I'm thinking a full face of some kind or a nasal mask of the correct size. I'll measure my big nose and figure out the size but from the trial and error I have been doing it would be a large. Thanks to you all for the help! (I wouldn't be doing anything pro-active about my sleep if it wasn't for the support of this community!)

Keeping your mouth closed is something many of us have a problem with. Many post here suggest practicing keeping your tongue on the roof of your mouth during the day .. to train it to stay there. I thought that sounded silly ... but over time it works. also taping your mouth closed helps to train you to keep it closed during the night.
You can purchase a new mask cushion from our hosts site without a script.

If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Get the Clinicians manual here : http://apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap-press ... tup-manual
