Storage card for REMstar Auto M Series A-flex?

Post by Dyssomniac » Sat Nov 22, 2014 2:32 pm

I was recommending SleepyHead to a friend who says he has a REMstar Auto M Series A-flex, which I assume is the same or very similar to my machine. However, instead of an SD card he says the data storage for his machine is on a card the size of a credit card. Is a card of that size actually used on that machine? If so, is there a way to read the data off it to use with SleepyHead on his computer?

Those cards were used for the old machines (of which I have one iteration earlier even than M series. Sorry I can't otherwise help though - not even a little bit technical!

sleepyhead doesn't read the data that the m series create.

for that you need an expensive smart card reader (that's what those credit card sized things with the gold contacts are called) and software called 'encore'.

it's a shame SH doesn't read the data... there's also a lot less data produced by those machines than then newer system one machines

Thanks. I'll have to tell him to check it out when he eventually gets his machine replenished.

You can get software for it called Encore Basic. He would need a card reader which are a bit pricy to read data from the card but it works and is what I used until I got my S9 recently. I still have my M-Series for backup purposes.

The card looks like:

And the reader is like:

If he has the card and the reader, he can request the software and someone here can get you a copy of it. I am fairly sure it is for Win based machines only though

The DT3500 Infineer card reader can easily be found on the internet.
$40 plus shipping from one source I know of.
Encore Basic or Pro or Viewer can be used...I can help with Basic or Pro and yes...Windows only software.
The M Series machines didn't flag Clear Airway (centrals) or RERAs...so those data points aren't available on the repors but they will show on the details page
AHI
and the AHI breakdown into Obstructive Apneas and Hyponeas
Plus it shows Flow limitations (in APAP mode only) and Snores and leak graphs and will tell you if there are large leaks.
So still a good bit of data available.
NR....Non Responsive...not necessarily the same thing as centrals.

The details report will look like this one below (one of my old M series reports) plus there are some additional trend and summary reports available that I don't have an example to show.

Hi Pugsy and Dyssomniac,

I have essentially the same need (my card and reader look just like the pictures in this thread). I've searched and read through some of these threads, but could still use some help. Would like to be brief for you, but I think knowing the full backstory tends to help with OSA. I'm 53, Male, overweight, and was diagnosed with OSA in 2005. My father and brother also use CPAPs. Went through the usual adjustments with machines, masks, pressures, etc. Eventually, I ended up with the following:

- REMstar Auto with C-Flex (which I gather is actually called A-flex, but the sticker on the machine says C-Flex), Model# 1017453.
- Pressures originally set at 8 to 11 cm.
- Respironics ComforGel Blue FFM (I have a deviated septum that I have tried to have repaired twice to no avail; I have tried nasal masks, pillows, and some other strange masks - this one is the best for me).

I found (via sleep studies and software) that I needed higher pressures over the years. I had old Encore Pro software, with MyEncore (from a fellow OSA patient who wrote it for a better UI). At one point, I loaded the software and set up the card reader on a new PC, and could never get it all to work. It was impossible to tell whether it was Encore Pro, the card (although I have 2 and tried both), or the reader.

I am having some problems now, and the sleep study I just had got me up to 17 cm., and they still couldn't get he AHI low enough - so I need to know what's going on. My thought was to refresh everything except the machine - get the most up-to-date software for my machine/card, and a new card reader.

I have a Window 7 PC and an XP machine (older, not so reliable) - would like to set this up on the Win7 PC. Can you guys point me to the best place(s) to get the card reader and software? This would be the first step in finding out what's really going on.

Thanks much,
Chris

Update: I'm already registered as cby1 - sorry about that.

I just uninstalled and re-installed Encore Pro 1.5i and the card reader SW on my old XP machine. Everything installed normally, seems to run without incident - even that squirrely SQL server.

Similar result - everything looks right, can add a patient, etc. Can preview the card info (both cards) which have a serial# and model# on them, BUT - when I go to read the data, one card says no data (as before), and the other card throws an error during the read. The DT3500 card reader light goes green when the card is inserted, is green during the read, and then goes red when the error occurs.

So I used the Encore Pro SmartCard option to set both cards up for data recording (which wipes anything on them, it says), and will try the experiment where I swap cards and AutoPAPs (both the same model) over several nights, and see what happens.

At this point, I'm thinking it's either the card(s) or the CPAP(s).

Thanks,
Chris (aka, cby1, cby123)

Here are some links for potentially finding the solution.
I would suggest checking the EP setup for the card reader connection type. If you have a USB reader and the software is set to a serial connection, it won't find it until you change the option.

No. A-Flex wasn't available on those Autos ("Legacy" models) until the later M Series models. The earlier M Series Autos only had C-Flex, too.

Thanks Den.

I got one of the cards to work with CPAP 2 (both beeped and displayed C - 1 errors immediately in the other CPAP - same model). Card #1 seemed to work for awhile in CPAP 2, but then woke me up beeping with the C - 1 error.

Card# 2 in CPAP 2 did capture data from last night, which I was able to read and display in Encore Pro. Now I need to figure out why MyEncore can't get to the SQL Database. I hope I don't need to re-install to allow a password on the DB - I vaguely remember something about that during install.

There were no passwords in (older) versions of Encore Pro........before the 2.0 releases.

Hi Den -

I wasn't clear - I think I made the mistake of leaving the SQL Server PW blank (or disabling - whatever EP said to do). I found another thread where your post (from Sleep-in-AL) cautions against that:

viewtopic/t102269/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=1 ... se#p167885

==================================
A second potential problem, which is addressed in the step by step instructions, is the way the SQL security settings are configured during the EncorePro installation. Make sure to set a password on the SA account. I'm not sure, but I believe that if you leave the account password blank, it may limit access to the database to "protect" your database. Even if this is not the case, you probably want your database password protected.

14. You should be prompted here to "Secure the Server." The default is to "Leave the SA account alone (Use a blank SA password). See my note at the beginning of this post regarding this. Change this to "Provide the SA password", then enter and confirm the password. Click "Next" to continue.
=================================

I haven't figured out how image attach works in this forum - but the error says "Unable to access the EncorePro database." and "SQL server does not exist or access denied". It does exist, since EP uses it fine and the little green arrow is visible on the SQL server icon.

So I take it this means uninstalling and re-installing everything, and putting a password on the SQL database?

Thanks,
Chris

I don't think there's a way or need for putting a password in the older versions.

Edit: OK, I read that post you linked to. I'd recommend leaving the password option "blank".
