Congestion as obstructive apneas

Post by englandsf » Fri Nov 21, 2014 7:45 am

Is it possible for a ResMed S9 Autoset to "interpret" blockages in the nose caused by congestion as obstructive events?

I am more "bunged up" than usual as winter sets in and the heat comes on, and my AHI have moved from below 1 to around 2. Cause for concern?

I would think the answer is yes. If you have a blockage, I don't think the machine can distinguish one blockage from another.

For instance, if a person holds his/her breath until they pass out, the machine has no way of determining if the airway has involuntarily closed or if the person is just stupid.

It may be that the machine sees the congestion more as an hypopnea than an obstructive event. It might also see it as a flow limitation which wouldn't be counted in the AHI..

What does your data say?

IMNSHO, your flow limitations are a bigger problem. Do you feel rested after night's sleep?
