My mask caused skin lesions

Post by DB » Thu Nov 20, 2014 1:28 pm

I am a new CPAP patient who has never been able to where a mask. The first mask was a full face mask and caused a basal cell carcinoma on the bridge of my nose.
I now have a huge concave depression on the side of my nose because of it.
Once that healed I asked for a nasal mask. I can't wear it for more than an hour because the nose pads make my nose sore (as in it feels abraded- not pressure).
I also tried (at the clinic) a fabric mask and it leaked so badly that I couldn't use that either.
I don't know what to do. This is starting to become quite expensive.
Is there a mask that is like a canula?

I suggest you look at Cpap.com and examine the very big variety of masks they have - all types - with many pix and graphs, reviews, etc. and then when you think you might be interested in certain ones, come back here and we can give you some feedback as well... sometimes a mask will sound great on paper but not work for a lot of people because of something you can't tell from looking. And do you have a good DME who'll let you try on different ones (lying down)?

One thing I'm going to mention however, is that your ca. was far more likely caused by the sun, if not genetics, because skin irritation alone doesn't generally cause cancer. There are also 'liners' you can wear under most masks to keep them from causing leaks and red marks.

Yes-ish, it's the nasal pillow style mask. Go to cpap.com and under Masks click on "nasal pillow" -- lots of models to choose from.

There is a mask which is like a cannula. They are called "prongs" instead of cannula.

https://www.cpap.com/productpage/innome ... e-kit.html

Though I would recommend that you look at one of the popular nasal pillow masks like the Resmed Swift FX nasal pillow or the ResMed AirFit P10 nasal pillow mask.
They are much more comfortable than the prongs are...plus with the prongs the fit has to be perfect..too small and it won't seal when inflated and too big and it hurts like the devil when inflated. I have tried the prongs...the nasal pillows are MUCH more comfortable and easier to manage.

It sounds like your skin may be seriously incompatible with mask materials. Do you know why this happened? Do you know how to prevent it from happening again? I think you may have bigger problems than simply finding a mask that fits.
