2nd night completed with Cpap, have questions

Post by Chongo » Wed Nov 19, 2014 11:25 am

Hi there,

Had some questions on getting adjusted to using a cpap! Ive completed my first two nights with the s9 autoset, I have been sleeping harder and interrupted than I can ever remember, My girl friend said she didn't even think I was in the bed because I don't move, toss & turn or make any noise while sleeping which is great! but have noticed ive been more groogy in these past two mornings since starting cpap therapy than usual,is that normal at first? ive had insomnia for pretty much my entire life, been on trazadone for at least 10 years and was curious if people in similar situations have stopped needing the use of medication for sleep once starting cpap treatment? and im not sure if the grogginess is my doing, I woke up after about 6 hours of sleep at 5am wide awake and then allowed my self to go back to sleep for a couple of hours and im wondering if because of using the cpap and getting such restful sleep that my body is only requiring 6-7 hours of sleep..is this the case for others as well? thanks in advance for any input!

What does your machine display say in the morning? AHI? Leak icon?

I have been on BiPAP therapy for two weeks. I am waking up earlier than I am used to, averaging a little over 6 hours of sleep a night. Of course, the time just changed, and it takes me several months to get used to that.
Though I still wake up in the night (usually after a REM stage) I don't have to get up to use the bathroom and usually have little trouble going right back to sleep.

Once you get settled in with your treatment you can look at the possibility of reducing your sleep med, and who knows, maybe even get off it. I wouldn't rush unless you feel over medicated. The dosage that worked for a sleep deprived brain may very well not the the dose for a normally rested brain. Adding a medicine change during the adjustment phase may not tell you much if your sleep turns out to be bad. Hard to know if it's the adjustment or the med change. Maybe it's just that your body is enjoying being able to sleep stress free and wants more of it. Best wishes sorting through things. Sounds like you're off to a great start.

I'd be questioning why I was given an s9 and not an Airsense?
Give yourself time to adjust to the machine, but you may not need as much sleep meds, or the sleep med/cpap combo are causing you to have centrals.

I would be questioning why you don't register?
Nothing wrong with an S9 Autoset...Great machine

True LSAT, but the supply chain should be challenged about why not the latest technology. Maybe they have a good answer, maybe they are exhibiting some level of incompetence and/or indifference to the patient. Challenge them.

I run with 100mg of the trazadone. and I asked for the S9 autoset because that's what people on this site recommended.s9 auto set is better than no machine at all. since ive only used the machine 3x now,im not sure how to get the data out of what data I should be looking for?

Since you are sleeping so much better, ask your doctor about a very gradual tapering off of Trazodone. You don't want to quit abruptly because of the likelihood of bad withdrawal. Do some reading --> https://www.google.com/search?q=Trazodo ... channel=sb

Press the "Info" button on your machine's display and tell us what the AHI is and whether the "Leak" icon is smiling.

If your AHI and leak are under control and you feel comfortable with the machine, the software is not necessary. But if you are having any problems, the software is highly recommended. I'll let someone else give you software instructions.

BTW, it could be that sleep apnea was your problem all along and Trazodone was an inappropriate treatment.
