New Day in Sleep Medicine?
I had an overnight sleep study (PSG) done Sunday night. Today, Thursday, a supervising technician called to go over the results in advance of my next Dr.'s appointment. The technician went over all the numbers, answering my questions, as well as the interpreting physician's findings and recommendations. The physician recommended a new range of auto pressures (lower than my current) and the tech said that the order to change the pressure settings had been sent to my DME, but, if I was comfortable with it, I could do it myself. On top of that, the 5 page Analysis Report and 2 page Interpretation were posted online at my doctor's patient web portal for my review.
Now, that's how it should go!
I realize this isn't particularly helpful to anyone, but I was so pleased with the experience that I had to share it. Additionally, it shows how it could work and maybe what should be expected.

Re: New Day in Sleep Medicine?
Wish I could say the same for my experience. Mine consisted of 2 night at a so called lab then a phone call on where to pick up my cpap. The gave me and another man instructions about the machine at the same time and sent us on our way. I reached out to my GP (referring Dr.) looking for my sleep study results and was faxed a 2 page report with about 2 paragraphs of info on them that basically said nothing besides a recommendation for a CPAP at 12.
Glad you had such a good experience and I hope that level of service spreads.

Re: New Day in Sleep Medicine?
Actually Jay, this is helpful because if I have complaint about my experience, my doctor is definitely going to hear about it and I will use your situation as an example if that is ok. I anticipate the sleep study will go well because I have already talked to the supervising technician who is wonderful and seems to understand the relevant issues. And she loved the fact that I was knowledgeable.
It is the doctor who I am concerned about but we all know that deal, right? And in my opinion, as long as one gets a good tech and the one doing my study trained under this lead tech, that is more important in my opinion.
It is what we have a right to expect and moving foward, it is exactly what I will be demanding as a patient. I am tired of the same old BS.

Re: New Day in Sleep Medicine?
On a related note, my cardiologist operates in the manner that you described regarding your recent experience Jay in sleep medicine. Recently, I had a test for an issue that turned out to be fine as it is genetic and just needs to be carefully watched on a yearly basis.
Anyway, the tech was allowed to give me information right away. None of this, "you need to wait and see the doctor" mantra.
Then when I saw the doctor for the follow up results, she told me to make sure to make an appointment to see her the same day so I wouldn't have to make two visits. I nearly died of shock for obvious reasons. Then the more I thought about this, I realized how sad things are when it has gotten to the point where we are surprised we run into a doctor that gives a damm like this one does. And she is also good by the way.
Yes, I realize doctors are busy but then why is this cardiologist able to do what she does when she is affiliated with the top heart center in my area and has a very busy schedule? As an FYI, she is constantly behind in schedule but that never bothers me because I know when I finally see her, I am going to have her full attention on my issues.

Re: New Day in Sleep Medicine?
49er - my Rheumatologist is like that! She has a large practice and never seems to stop but always gives every patient the time they need to be sure every thing is right and the patient goes away feeling like there has been good care with her! If I need to see her for some reason between my 4 month checkups, all I have to do is call and I can get in that day!
This is how doctors should operate! I just wish my GP and my sleep doctor were like that!

Glad to hear you have an excellent Rheumatologist Hawthorne who provides great patient care. Wow to get in to see a specialist on the same day is awesome.Hawthorne wrote:49er - my Rheumatologist is like that! I wish someone would interview doctors like your Rheumatologist and my Cardiologist to find out why they operate in the positive manner that they do. What makes them able to do what they do?

Re: New Day in Sleep Medicine?
I don't know 49er but it would be great if they were interviewed to see how they do it. By the way, my Rheumatologist has 7 children as well as a full practice! They are quite grown now but she has always been this way.
There is a story around the hospital ( and knowing her I believe it is true) that while she was in having her 7th child, she rolled up her hospital pajama bottoms, put on a lab coat and went over to the Rheumatology department to take care of a patient!!!! That may be a bit much but WOW - now that's a doctor who cares!!

Here's what the Interpreting Physician wrote as part of the recommendations:
I don't think there's any doubt he's saying a full data auto.Treatment of OSA with Auto CPAP @ 7-10 cm of water pressure with CFlex of 1: AHI/Leak, Clinical Efficacy and Compliance Data Card Required : Heated Humidifier:
