Very mild oscillating or pulsing sound on my two year old S9

Post by MrGrumpy » Wed Oct 29, 2014 7:12 pm

My Resmed S9 Autoset is now over two years old and Ive used it like crazy. Unfortunately, in the last few weeks Ive started feeling really bad again. Even though Ive lost forty pounds over the summer and Fall.

My machine is making a subtle but noticeable "oscillation" or pulsing noise when the blower is turned on and everything is hooked up. I will be laying in bed with the mask on and if I breathe, I hear the normal inhale and exhale noise. But when not breathing for several seconds, I will hear a mild pulsing or oscillating noise, like maybe the motor or blower or whatever is not quite 100%. Other than this noise, I cant detect anything wrong with my S9 Autoset. Its one month past the two year warranty.

Anybody ever experienced this or heard of it or read about it?

thanks,

Eric
Id be dead by now if I didn't use my CPAP gear every night.

why are you holding your breath? you're just confusing the poor machine.

if you quit breathing, after something like 6 seconds, it starts trying to figure out whether your throat has closed, or your brain has quit telling you to breath.

it does that by creating a 4hz pressure oscillation and watching to see what that does to the pressure reading.

google "resmed FOT" and quit messing with your poor autoset's little brain!

fuck you, I am not intentionally holding my breath. No way in hell am I holding my breath for six seconds...or at all. I was asking a serious question. My machine started making this noise I never noticed before.

I shall reply in kind. "up yours, you vile old bastard".

now that the pleasantries are out of the way, I'll point out that you started off saying that you were not breathing.

what, exactly, do you want to call "not breathing for several seconds" if not 'holding your breath'?

I'm terribly sorry if you don't like the *fact* that the machine is *doing what it's supposed to be doing* and I can't really help if you've never noticed that before.

have a nice day.

This is normal. I have a VPAP Auto S9 and this actually performs the same thing. It most likely does it at four times per second, or 4Hertz and this does this because of the machine's need to determine what kind of respiratory Events that you are having. for example if you are asleep, and you have an apnea. It will do this to see if your having an Obstructive, or, a Central apnea. This is known as the Forced Oscillation Technique, or FOT! It is actually very interesting to research this. It is in the Service Manual. I'm sorry that the troll here had to post on your discussion. ResMed really knows what they are doing with this Technique, and they have used it, and used it very well. That way, it does not increase the pressure for a Central, and so when you have a Central, the Events are not made worse by an Increased Pressure. If you are having an Obstructive, It will detect this problem, and will increase the pressures accordingly I certainly find this technique very interesting. I can actually feel the oscillations in my VPAP and I really found it cool. I knew that this would happen, but when I actually felt the Oscillation, I really REALLY, had to just sit and fool around with this for quite a while. You can see the pressure oscillations on the bar graph if you have a VPAP machine that has the ability to deliver BiLevel, Pressures! Thereis a few YouTube videos that are on YouTube about this technique that ResMed uses! If you are now wondering how many times PER MINUTE that this happens, well, Each Hertz is equal to 60 cycles, so 4 times 60 equals 240 oscillations per minute, or OPM! 240 OPM Thank you, and God Bless.

er, no, hertz is cycles per second.
hertz
hərts/
noun: hertz; plural noun: hertz; symbol: Hz

the SI unit of frequency, equal to one cycle per second.
so 4 hertz is 4 times a second.
