Taking mask off while asleep

Post by thumperbill » Wed Oct 29, 2014 7:00 am

I've been having trouble for weeks now where I wake around 4:30 - 5:30 am and find I've taken my mask off during the night. Checked the usage on the machine tonight and only had the nasal mask on 2.7 hours then slept without it another 2 3/4 hour when I woke. Don't know how I can stop this problem of taking it off while asleep.

I take several meds to make me sleep which I assume is why it takes so long for me to wake up without the mask on.

Any suggestions on how I can stop this? I use a nasal mask. I also don't have a partner that might wake up hearing me having trouble in my sleep.

Hi thumperbill,

The first thing I think of when someone does this is possible nasal congestion. Is that an issue for you perhaps?

Also, what is your pressure setting as too low of one can also cause that?

If you could use the link in my signature to fill out your equipment profile, then members could better tailor their responses to your situation. Hopefully, you have a data capable machine and can download sleepyhead (DL link in my signature also) to see exactly what is going on with your therapy.

Here is an idea from a fellow mask remover. Please try it and tell me the results. Super glue the mask on and simply disconnect the hose during the day. You would walk around with the mask and a short section of the hose all day but you would not remove the mask in your sleep.

Could you go to sleep with mittens on? Would make it harder to remove the mask so you might wake up first

If you take the mask off, its most likely because you can't breath enough. Look into how to deal with nasal congestion.

Go to your sleep doctor to make sure the pressure is right for you. Also try out other masks. My sleep tech suggested to me the nasal pillow mask because it is ideal for stomach sleepers. I'm just waiting on mine.

No duct tape or superglue. Both would be baaa-aaad. What's the pressure set at? Could it be too low, and that's causing you to try removing it while you sleep? Does the machine you use have a setting to alert you if the mask is removed?
It's too bad we don't have the "cone of shame" for people like we do our pets when we want to keep them from licking or scratching...I also don't recommend bungee cording your hands down near waist level...just another thought that popped into my slightly warped mind, sorry.

Hello Thumperbill,

As you, it took me about a year to FINALLY sleep all night wearing a mask.
Your body may be reacting to this new mask thing. So many do.
A suggestion, when your are home, periodically put the mask on, especially when you're reading or watching tv.
Your brain will be more willing to all the mask at and not rebel.

When time allows stop by my "welcome cart" grab some chocolate chip cookies and cocoa or chocolate milk.

Hey Thumperbill,

What meds are you using to help you sleep?
