Inspired Therapy

Post by Broken Bob » Wed Oct 29, 2014 5:19 am

Any comments about Inspired Therapy? Apparently it is a transplant that will automatically stimulate muscles when it detects apnea. Even though it appears to be FDA approved, I am not real receptive to having a foreign object embedded in my body. Eliminating the mask and a noisy machine could overcome my objection.

Broken Bob,

I definitely plan to explore this option at some point as I am getting close to concluding that pap therapy is not going to work for me unless I have some type of surgery. Not at that point yet but I see the finish line.

First, I plan on having a sleep study and see what they come up with titration wise since all I had was a worthless home study 3years ago. If I conclude that things are not going to improve after a certain amount of time, I plan to see an ENT about having a septoplasty. I had scheduled one earlier this year but decided against it for various reasons.

If the septoplasty doesn't improve things, the Inspire Procedure would be what I would pursue next. For some reason, it appeals to me over ones that would alter the throat anatomy as it seems less invasive. Of course, I would make sure I carefully looked at the data to make sure it was the right option for me.

Personally, if pap therapy worked for me, i wouldn't be looking at any kind of surgery. But obviously, only you can make that call.

Why not go to the site and find the provider for the therapy in your area and make an appointment if you insurance company will cover it? See what they have to say as you are under no obligation.

Thanks for your input. This group is having a seminar in November and I am signed up to attend. It is an introduction to the product and I am sure I will get most of my questions answered. I have been on Bpap for 3 years. About a year ago I had deviated septum and turbinate reduction surgery. It made a world of difference not only with the apnea but just in my daily living--I CAN BREATHE!!! I would highly recommend you seeing your ENT and going along with what he/she suggest. Before the surgery my AHI was running in the 35-30 area with the Bpap. Now I am down to the 5-6 and working on getting it lower.

Thanks BB. Let me know what you find about the procedure.

I definitely plan to see an ENT once I have the sleep study which should occur within the next two weeks. My AHI is fine with therapy but I am hoping having the surgery will improve my tolerance and enable me to stay asleep on the machine for a longer period of time.

It sounds like HGNS; is it? --or something else?

I was aware that devices like this were being developed but I didn't realize any were actually ready for the market. Maybe soon we'll see feedback here on the forum from some real live patients.

I wonder if the device causes some sleep issues itself as it activates the muscles... And how often it takes more than one try to get it placed exactly where it needs to be...

Great questions Kennerly that I need to keep in mind if I look into this procedure. Thanks!
