CPAP Titration study followed by delirious behavior

Post by Eerie » Sat Oct 25, 2014 12:03 pm

So, I had my CPAP Titration study on Thursday (night before last) and I woke up feeling tired but not can't-open-my-eyes tired like most mornings. I only had a 6hr block to sleep and I don't know how long I actually did, but that gave me a bit of hope that this will help me. I won't know my results for another 7-10 days though (or get my RX for a machine), my technician just said I needed "medium" pressure and I spent a lot longer in REM sleep. I'm hoping it will be the shorter amount of time, I think I might call them and bug them as the initial study they said the same thing and I was calling them 2 weeks later because I still hadn't heard what was up.

All day yesterday (Friday) however I dipped in and out of really tired and so exhausted I'm about to collapse. Kept ebbing and flowing spontaneously. That night I was almost delirious. I would start laughing at nothing hysterically then breaking down crying back and forth back and forth (this is the kind of thing that got me diagnosed as bipolar all those years ago and I believe wrongly as they wouldn't look at my sleep), I was getting really confused, not remembering names or in the middle of a sentence not being able to complete it, suddenly zoning out. Finally my bf insisted I go to bed and I went to sleep for 11 hours...I finally got up feeling like complete and utter crap and had the worst headache. I know I didn't sleep well at all but the delirium feeling is gone. I'm back to just feeling horrible as usual.

I have to say it scared me a bit, was this the result of getting some sleep finally at the CPAP Titration study? That's the only thing that makes sense.

Once in a great while, we get so used to pain, that suddenly removing it can be a very emotional experience.
--Emotional, and confusing. If this is the case, it is likely to be temporary.
You should quickly get in tune with therapy, and hopefully will find your new, better normal soon.
As long as you have to wait, you can learn about machines and dealing with suppliers (DME's)--
so you can avoid getting a "brick".

A lot of medical and biological things happen to your body and brain when you have apnea. You're basically being strangled in your sleep. There are stress hormones, sleep deprivation, low oxygen and several other things. Your body adjusts to these things.

Sometimes when you start using CPAP and no longer have apnea, the adjustments your body made leave you "out of balance" for a while.

You might also have not slept well during the test due to the strangeness of everything.

However, discuss it with your doctor. You might have something else.

Read the links in my signature line to help avoid getting screwed by your DME (CPAP salesman).

If you are on any medications, they could need adjusted as you get better sleep and hormone levels change. What worked before may be right for you now. I have read on here where one new CPAP user's bi-polar meds caused an adverse response after treating her sleep apnea. I had a similar reaction when I first started taking Provigil. Had to drop the dose way low then gradually build up. Please make your doctor and someone close to you aware of what you are experiencing so they can stay in tune as you begin treatment and sort things out.

I actually took myself off all my depression/bipolar meds over a year ago because they weren't helping any of my problems and I didn't care for the on going side effects. I feel much better off them I don't think I should have been on them in the first place. I've had some major sleep deprivation for years. And if I've needed CPAP this whole time it all starts to make sense.

The only thing I take is some vitamins/supplements and birth control. The only thing that was different than my everyday was the CPAP Study.
