time to replace S8 VPAP Auto, have a few questions

Post by magentapolkadots » Thu Oct 23, 2014 7:03 pm

I've been in denial about the consistency/severity of my aerophagia. I recently took a look at summary data and charted all the nights that show my mask time broken up into 2 hour chunks (with an hour in between to let the gas pass). 8-10 nights a month are wrecked because I repeatedly awaken with a belly painfully full of air. I'm not sure why it took a highlighter and a calendar to make me see that therapy isn't going as well as I thought it was...like I said, denial.

So obviously I need to figure out how to make the aerophagia better. But right now I need to make a decision on a replacement machine. My S8 is nearing 14,000 hours and about 2 weeks ago I dropped it with a full humidifier. The water leaked all into the machine and completely fried it for the night (random blinky lights, blasts of pressure, sudden stopping all together). Thankfully, after drying out, it worked for me the next night and every night since. But now I'm worried that it is running on borrowed time. I do not have a back-up, so I want to replace it ASAP.

I have been reading extensively on here about the differences between the S9 Auto and the System 1 Auto. I printed and highlighted the dickens out of a lovely post by robysue that went into LOTS of detail on the 2 machines. This is where I am stuck...

It seems like the System One would be better for the aerophagia, allowing IPAP to increase without necessarily increasing EPAP. However I am comfortable with my S8- breathing with it I mean. Reading how folks seem to prefer one OR the other in how it "matches" a person's breathing...I feel like my S8 matches my breathing patterns well. Does that mean that the Respironics may not feel as natural to me? Are there people who have used both and feel like both fit their breathing just fine? Is the S9 different enough from the S8 that it may not feel as natural to me anyway because of changes in the algorithm on the newer machines?

I have an appointment with the DME on Tuesday, supposedly to set up my new PR System One BiPap Auto (cause I told them that's what I wanted). But I am not sure I'm ready to commit. I would really like to rent each for a month and then make a decision, but I don't know if they will allow me that option. I haven't been able to get a price from the DME or the insurance company yet. If my OOP is ridiculous, I will be buying from cpap.com or maybe second wind cpap.

I know y'all can't make the decision for me, but I would appreciate thoughts you may have on things I may not have considered.
