960 USERS problem??

Post by racprops » Wed Oct 22, 2014 10:04 am

OK I have had my new Phillips Respironics Machines 960 for a few days.

I have noted a much lower water use and output which I am told is normal..the old 950 seemed to put out much more water and I was using setting 1 most of the time, the 960 I am not getting as much, not even on setting 3.

BUT when I wake up after a few hours of use when I remove the mask I smell hot metal...like a empty pot on a stove.

And as I still have my old 950 tank I noticed that the metal plate on the bottom of it has contact and scrap marks which the new tank does not show any even after days of use and we change the water daily so it is removed in the morning and put back in at night, there should be marks by now..

It is my belief this metal plate should be in contact with the heater plate in the bottom of the humidifier to conduct the heat to the water in the tank.

I will try the bottom part of the 950 tank in the 960 humidifier to see if it both works better and uses more water.

If it does work better then the problem is with the tank, if not then perhaps the hot plate is too low.

I wondered if any other users have noted these findings.

Rich

I have been on my 960 (the first machine I've ever had) for about a month and a half. I don't have this problem at all. My concerns are with running out of water. If I put my humidifier above 2 and hose above 2, I run out of water. I was concerned about it being a problem and the guy at the DME said that the machine will shut it off if it runs out so not to worry about the machine burning up.

From what you described, it sounds like it is not making good contact so maybe it is shutting off without using the water at all. Just a thought.

My 960 would also run out of water frequently until the last few days.
I noticed that the 960 tank is smaller then my old S9 Autoset by about 15%.

Interesting that is 190 degrees from my unit that hardly uses any water...

Do all of yours show contact marks on the metal pads?

Yes, there are a couple spots that look like it has scraped but they rub right off when I clean the unit.
