water around lungs

Post by advancepromo3 » Tue Oct 21, 2014 6:49 am

I am 63 yrs. old, not overweight, and works out. Just got of hospital after 5 days. They removed almost one liter of fluid from outside each side lung lobe--all fluid on the outside of lungs, of course this made it very hard to breathe. Fluid showed HIGH white cell count (infection). I've had three cat scans, one ultra sound all other organs good, heart, etc., no tumors no masses. I am not running a fever, blood pressure normal. Most recent blood tests are from an Infectious disease Dr. results of tests will take 2 weeks, so do not know yet.

Is it possible to get an infection, bacteria, amoeba from the cpap machine? My cleaning of machine left something to be desired, and have used non-distilled water several times--please help I feel like I'm getting fluid again, even tho just removed several days ago.

I am also scheduled from endoscopy/colonoscopy soon and biopsys of things will be taken. --stomach is also bloated, and hurts on right side--utra sound showed no fluid in stomach area. Must mention they think I might have gall stones, and I have a hitial hernia. Fluid around lung lobes also makes my voice raspy

Any help please?

Have you asked any of the many doctors you saw what would cause this?

It could be congestive heart failure--but my heart is very good! I do have a mitral valve prolapse but all is good with heart--I go to cardio Dr. every 6 months and he visited me every day I was in hosp. heart is good thank goodness

If you were to have an infection from the machine - the machine that puts room air into you just like regular breathing does - the likelihood of you're having pulmonary edema (or congestive failure) is so remote as not to be an issue. Even if you picked up a tiny 'bug' somehow, you might end up with a cold, but not PE. Certainly you would have had other symptoms of infection besides that.

An infectious disease Dr., was called in and did many blood tests that were different than others b/4-- the "blood nurse" remarked that she's never done these test b/4, ---infectious Dr., asked me if I've been to any other countries (never mentioned Ebola), eaten strange food.
It will take 2 weeks for results--

Blood nurse = phlebotomist (not a nurse at all, unless it was a nurse who incidentally also took your blood).

LOL I knew that
just couldn't spell it--I went to nursing school (never graduated) sister is RN., also worked in the hospital for awhile inthe surgical dept. Also do lots of reading-- wonder if this is from my hiatal hernia? It actually feels that this water is coming back/voice getting raspy/harder to breathe than yesterday/runny nose

thank you for talking to me

I usually refer to them as 'vampires'.

the head lab tech at one hospital I was hanging around in had a name tag that said "chief vampire".

I can't imagine that your machine would cause issue on its own. That would require more than questionable cleaning regimien, I would think. Has it or any of the parts (hoses, mask, etc) been anywhere so filthy that it could have possibly been contaminated?

This is my only guess on how this scenario could play out. Otherwise, when I get sick or have health issues, I always consider that it could be old age smacking me upside the head.

my guess would have been chf
which btw can result from untreated sleep apnea
i am not so sure a mitral valve prolapse means good heart either

Please register and get an ID. Then enter your CPAP equipment on your profile. We can give you better advice that way.

There's a link in my signature line on how to do this.

It's probably not from your CPAP machine. Any germs in that came from you or from your home environment. Also, germs from the CPAP, other than the mask don't have an easy way to get into your body.

However, clean it really well anyway. More advice once you fill in your profile and tell us how you clean it. Clean it well. There's also Control III disinfect sold by our sponsor, cpap.com and other places. Read the directions and use that to disinfect your CPAP equipment. Do you use distilled water?

Since OP stated "all fluid on the outside of lungs" this is called pleural effusion and can be caused by several things with CHF as one possibility. I also do not think the Cpap machine would be the cause. You could do an internet look up of pleural effusion but until you get all your test results you won't have an answer. If your breathing is getting worse the fluid could be recurring and you should ask your healthcare provider at what point you need to return.

No quite sure how to edit profile--didn't see my machine listed
Try to use distilled water/tho ran out a couple of times and use the "machine refill" for empty gallon plastic jugs--refill available at grocery store-I use that for my pets water to drink and mine also---clean now with soap and water/have used diluted bleach water b/4
will have another endoscopy (to check hiatal hernia) and colonoscopy (it's already scheduled) and Dr. will take biopsy of certain organs, gallbladder and I'm sure whatever she's able to take

Mask is: respironics comfort lite 2
machine is: ResMed S9 series
humidifier: H51 heated humidifier set at 3.5
there is a SD card that I take to DR

which model name...there's about 13 different model names. Model name is clearly stated on the top of the blower up by the on/off button.

So far I don't see that you are even registered.
But once registered here's how to add your equipment
