Snoring Questions

Post by tlewis303 » Mon Oct 20, 2014 5:39 pm

Hello,
I haven't been on in a while.
Had a question about snoring.
Can snoring cause airway obstruction and thus reduce O2 to the brain?

I think that snoring is a result of the obstruction of sufficient air. Though we are all different, the obstruction will reduce oxygen in your bloodstream which supports the brain, lungs etc...

You have it incorrectly worded.
Snoring IS (caused by) an airway obstruction. It's a "sound" that's produced while inhaling. Nasal or mouth or both.
If you don't or can't breathe through your nose, it becomes necessary to breathe through the mouth.

Doing nasal cleansing can reduce snoring.

Here are a few links that may help.

http://www.sleepeducation.com/sleep-dis ... -and-facts

http://www.entnet.org/content/snoring-and-sleep-apnea

http://www.webmd.com/sleep-disorders/guide/snoring

By the way, I haven't found any evidence that says that snoring in itself lowers O2. It's always mentioned that it's a possibility that the snorer could have Sleep Apnea.......which CAN lower O2.

The other question is if the cpap pressure is increased will that decrease snoring events?

It does for me. Apparently I don't snore at all anymore (according to my husband)

Maybe. (along with nasal cleansing)

I've been using sinus rinse with a steroid per my ENT for 2 weeks now, not helping much. May have to have surgery to straighten septum and remove some tissue in order to breathe well through my nose.
Sucks.... Maybe if I did that I would need cpap anymore...

Try saline rinses - less chance of backlash effect that steroids can have... and (can't remember earlier thread of yours) have you turned down (or up) the humidifier to try and fix things?

I really want to add to this thread. I believe that not long ago a Nobel Prize winner gave a statement to the “press” that snoring is really bad for you. This was in the context of snoring without OSA. I always believe that snoring has as its result suffocation. I found this video while searching for the PHd’s statement. Please; all of you out there; please comment and give your opnions.

I have tried humidifier both on and off with just nose pillows and full face mask, doesn't seem to help. I tried pillows for the first time. They seem to cause my nose to become sore inside with all that air blowing up there as I guess its not use to it, the tissue I mean.

I think the ENT wanted to see if the salt/steroid solution would reduce inflammation first before considering surgery. Who even knows if my insurance will cover it...lol

I've heard that around 90% of people who chronically snore most likely have some form of OSA.

You can get saline rinses at the drugstore, cheap compared to prescription stuff.
