Anyone with o2 Supplement..... my goal is to get rid of this
One week in.... the "events" were bad enough but #1 priority is the desaturations....O my. Will the CPAP eventually help me rid the need for o2. I'm only using at night..... not exactly what the doctor ordered if you know what I mean. Really needing to rid the weight and start moving again.... beginning to feel like I can start up again.... but I don't want this o2!!

the only way you'll know if you need it is to use a recording oximeter and track your sats.

Re: Anyone with o2 Supplement..... my goal is to get rid of this
If obstructions were the only cause of your low oxygen, theoretically effective CPAP treatment would resolve the issue. If you need additional oxygen due to something else going on with your health, that's another story. Do you have a copy of your reports? Maybe there's some mention of while on CPAP you still had trouble. If you indeed have a problem outside of the sleep apnea, the doctor should be talking to you about what's going on.

Re: Anyone with o2 Supplement..... my goal is to get rid of this
I agree with PR. You could ask the doctor to order an overnight pulse-oximetry test. Should be "free" through your DME. You get a recording pulse oximeter and clip the "thingie" to your finger while you're sleeping. Then, you take the device into the DME and they download the data and print out a report for the doctor (and maybe they'll give you one if you ask for it). That will show whether you're dropping below the threshold of 89 during the night.bmc23 wrote:One week in.... the "events" were bad enough but #1 priority is the desaturations....O my. My doctor originally ordered 2L of O2 for me on my Rx, but I didn't pursue it (because I was bypassing the local DMEs). In an early followup with him he asked about it......and then called one of the DMEs to order one for me. My daytime levels were in the mid-90s anyway (I had access to a non-recording finger pulse ox at work), and after starting on therapy, my reports showed I was having almost no apneas anymore. But, I stopped in at the DME shop he had ordered it through and picked up the devices. I actually got two of them to use over two nights over a weekend. Anyway, I used them and then took them back to have them downloaded (and also got a copy of the report). They sent the report to the doctor and that's the last I heard from him. If you don't want to use it, you need to prove you don't need it. (unless you refuse to use it)

if you can't get tests done for free... buy your own.
one of the best, a cms50i is about 100$ direct from china on the aliexpress website.
I've seen people paying their doctor/dme more than that for a single test.

Re: Anyone with o2 Supplement..... my goal is to get rid of this
Da... didn't give any information did I...sorry. In August 2014 I had my 1st sleep study. I informed the tech that I just found out I had low o2. He said the hospital protocol was that they would administer o2 at a 75% reading..... I never got that low so alls well. Lights on.... it took me hours to fall asleep and when I did I was at 74%. While they learned alot, the outcome of that study was zilch as I only slept 36 mins.
When we arrived at the winter home I became involved with a sleep center/pulmonologist that suggested home study. The results set me in a whirl: Apnea-Hypopnea 415: Central 34, Obstructive 77, mixed 12, Hypopneas 292 - Index 50.8 desaturations 258: 15 min in the 90s, 247 min in the 80s, 218 min in the 70s, 5.3min in 60s, .2min in the 50s and .5 mins below 50. That all set me off for ABGs - a titration study - and the order for CPAP with o2 supplement. A week into therapy I had the oximeter overnight and have a meeting with the pulmonologist at the 2 week mark to overview everything. I have the order for o2 24/7....I just can't do that..... I have to wage war!!

if you need it, the alternative: " . . . not enough and you're gonna die"

Depending on why you need supplemental oxygen, better self care could help-

If your need is due to a progressive condition, you have my sympathy, but don't quit on yourself.

You have an order for O2 during the day also?bmc23 wrote: I have the order for o2 24/7
If you need it during the day while awake...optimal cpap therapy is unlikely to fix the deficiency.
Now come you need it during the day? How low are the readings during the day?
Any other health or lung issues going on?
Now often when people only have oxygen deficiencies at night due to the apnea events themselves...then once the apnea events are eliminated and O2 is normal during the night then O2 isn't needed but when someone needs it during the day..that usually means something else is going on.

Thank you... I do hear what you're saying & appreciate your knowledge... but I do understand where I'm going. Not everything makes sense to me at the moment ... no cough/pleghm but they call it COPD w/Advair rx [long time smoker quit 6 yrs ago], clear chest PA & LAT, echo and stress check ok - endurance lousy now but I'm working on the weight/endurance... suspicion of PFO... I totally function and caregive to my husband with Parkinsons due AgentOrange exposure. I'm working to keep day in the 90s.... it's the hand I was delt.

Thanks for that additional information. That helps explain WHY it's being prescribed.bmc23 wrote:Thank you... Do you own or rent your concentrator?
Additional Comments: Millennium Respironics o2 concentrator @3L piggybacked to Cpap
If you're renting (through insurance), you might want to investigate buying your own. I believe acbio.com sells some of them.
I realize you want to get rid of it entirely, but, like you said......."it's the hand I was dealt".

Re: Anyone with o2 Supplement..... my goal is to get rid of this
I have never smoked and never been diagnosed with COPD.
I do have a low tidal volume when I sleep 200 to 400 typical.
I use 3 lpm O2 and maintain 93 to 94% SPO2 at night with AHI below 3.
I see no reason to eliminate the O2.
Why fight it if it is keeping you alive?

but, do you need it? the only way to tell is to take the 02 off and wear an oximeter.
don't guess, find out.

Re: Anyone with o2 Supplement..... my goal is to get rid of this
Just being clear.... I do use the o2 at night. I recognize the %'s I had are nothing to fool with. However....I am "hoping" though once we get the cpap pressure regulated that I could get off of it. Just NOT doing the 24/7 bit.... not without a good fight.

Good for you for sticking with it. The hard part of being a caregiver is
your attention in centered on your charge, often to the exclusion of taking the best care of yourself.
This is why patients too often outlive their caregivers--a grim thought indeed.
Sending hopeful thoughts your way.
