sleepy even with cpap! Helpp!!

Post by messiah23 » Thu Oct 02, 2014 2:14 am

Hi Guys. I am 22 and i have sever OSA. when i went for my sleep study this was my result, AHI 122.1/h longest obstructive apnea 56secs lowest SpO2 77%, total sleep time where oxygen was above 90% is 8.4%, 0 central apneas (relief!!!) OSA (6hrs study) 444 times, Hypopnoeas 326times, Max osa 56secs, mean apnea 19.4secs, total duration of osa in 6hours is 143.3mins, AHI in REM/h is 106.7 AHI in NREM/H is 123.2 and AHI in TST/H is 122.1. I have had days where i wake up with barely any energy to move a muscle feeling like a paralysed person where i need to stay in a position fighting to open my eyes for about 15 mins before i can get up. After my sleep study results came out my doc got me a DME company that provided me a temporary cpap that same evening till i got my F&P Icon Auto from a online site. the pressure used to be from 4cm to 18cm. however i still feel tired in the day and today i just increased it to start from 9cm. Not too sure what i'm doing wrong that makes me this sleepy but it has improved my energy from before cpap therapy. I was playing with the machine and my AHI showed 4.5 per hour as per the machine. Is there any other way to feel better such as medications as even though the pressure is not too high i do tend to get up in the night due to the discomfort of the mask and my job which at time requires me to answer my phone at odd hours. Also is my pressure setting alright or do i have to increase the minimum pressure? i am currently on a Apex 220 full face mask and considering getting a F&P made mask as this one tends to leak when i move my head. what would you guys recommend. Thanks in Advance!!

You will probably want to tighten your pressure range, possibly with a higher minimum pressure. But you really need to look at your data first and see what kind of events you are still having and what your pressure is doing. You can use your data to see what changes will benefit you the most.

Who would have thought it would be this challenging to sleep and breathe at the same time?

Try posting a new topic with the machine name and help. There are people here who use that machine, and they can give you info on how to get useful data and make changes. But they may not read this topic. If they see their machine listed, they will be more likely to read and respond.

Please fill in your profile with the exact equipment you're using and the settings.

How long have you been using your CPAP?
How many hours per night do you use it?

I also suspect that the wider range of pressures and the pressure changes are disrupting your sleep.

Is your Icon the newer ICON with the + as part of the model name?
SleepyHead has a Mac version available.

I think you are going to need some sort of adapter for the smart stick to be able to plug into your Mac on one of the USB ports maybe. If there is no slot available on the Mac then you have to use some sort of adapter that will plug into whatever the Mac has.
Need something that the smart stick can plug into that will then plug into something on the Mac on the other end.

The InfoSmart software is Windows only...won't work on your Mac anyway unless you put Windows on the Mac.
It's a PITA to install and use...but if you want it I know where you can find it.
But SleepyHead works just fine and I wouldn't mess with InfoSmart because you don't gain anything with it except hassles and headaches.

Regarding your symptoms.....we need a lot more information to be able to have any sort of idea what might be going on..along with detailed software reports.
How to insert images of your reports explained here

Not sure if anyone read the bold from your post, but that would make me think to why you are sleepy during the day. I'm confused why people are wanting to increase or decrease flow without a talk with a doc...

Most doctors don't know diddly squat beyond the diagnosis and writing the prescription and don't care at all about looking at the data from the machines (if there even is any).
They have come to believe that a wide open pressure range (4-20 cm.) is capable of providing adequate therapy. Again, they don't know "jack s**t".

Hi, The doctors do not adjust the cpap pressure settings in singapore but DME does. They started me off from 4cm of pressure but with my F&P Icon the senseawake kicks in whenever i wake up and it will start back from 4cm. whenever it goes back to 4, i find it difficult to inhale as it is suffocating. it feels like there is not enough air. at about 7.5cm it is ideal but ineffective. yesterday when i bumped it up to 9.5 i slept much much better. Thanks!

Appropriate levels of Vitamin D, Iron and Testosterone are common ways that people are tired outside of sleep apnea.

And, Sleep Apnea has probably been the culprit for disrupting those levels, too.
